The longest League One pre-season in history continues on Tuesday when Sheffield Wednesday’s hopeless Championship campaign rocks up at Watford’s Vicarage Road (19:45 GMT, live on Sky Sports+).

The Owls are 28 points adrift of safety with as many games to play, and the Hornets have lost just once on home turf in 2025/26. My Watford vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions follow with full team news and Betfred’s latest match odds.

Team News

Javi Gracia remains without Rocco Vata and Caleb Wiley as he looks to inspire a second straight win following the come-from-behind success against Norwich City on Saturday.

Giorgi Chakvetadze went off injured during the first half of the 3-2 victory so Tom Ince could start.

Watford haven’t chalked up back-to-back wins since beating Middlesbrough and Luton Town in February.

For Wednesday there remains very little to choose from in Henrik Pedersen’s thin squad.

Pierce Charles returned in goal for the 59 minutes of Saturday’s abandoned fixture at Blackburn Rovers, while Liam Cooper was preferred to Gabriel Otegbayo in defence.

The Owls boss might want to mix things up in the forward line, but he is short of options since his first alternative, Ike Ugbo, hasn’t scored a league goal in 20 months.

Watford vs Sheffield Wednesday Predicted Lineups

  • Watford:Baxter; Ngakia, Keben, Pollock, Bola; Maamma, Kayembe, Louza, Ince; Doumbie, Kjerrumgaard
  • Sheffield Wednesday: Charles; Valery, Cooper, M Lowe; Fusire, Ingelsson, J Lowe, Amass; McNeill, Cadamarteri, Bannan

Watford vs Sheffield Wednesday Odds

The Hornets are 1/2 to record the victory at Vicarage Road, with Wednesday 9/2 to upset all the odds and grab a second win of the campaign.

The draw is a 3/1 chance, while it’s 4/5 for both teams to score.

Luca Kjerrumgaard is the 4/1 favourite to net the first goal of the game.

Watford vs Sheffield Wednesday Stats

  • The 52 goals scored in Watford matches this season is the sixth-highest total for any club in the Championship
  • Wednesday have lost four straight, conceding 10 goals in that time. They also trailed against Blackburn at the time of the abandonment
  • The Owls’ last win over Watford came courtesy of a Connor Wickham goal at Vicarage Road in December 2013 (D4, L5 since, scoring five and conceding 17)

Today's Football Fixtures

Handicap +1: Watford -1 @ 11/8

There’s not much mystery about Wednesday games at this moment in time, with the margin of defeat often providing the jeopardy.

Even in Saturday’s shortened fixture at Ewood Park, the Owls were way off the pace and managed to make a Blackburn side who have been awful at home look like a fully-functioning outfit.

Watford showed in twice coming from a goal down against Norwich that they have a bit of something about them, and they should have plenty to spare against a Wednesday side whose number they have had plenty of times in recent years.

I can see a home victory by at least two goals, with the 11/8 odds about such a success implying a 42.1% probability.

Result & BTTS: Watford & No @ 6/4

The Hornets should see this as an opportunity to find their range a little bit. Wednesday have been better away from home than at Hillsborough, but that’s hardly saying something.

The toothless Owls shouldn’t cause too many problems, with their shots-on-target rate of late being pretty pitiful.

While Watford have conceded a reasonable amount of goals this season, they have more than enough at the back to deal with Wednesday’s very sporadic attacks.

This one is another 6/4 shot, and I find that generous in the least.
