Middlesbrough have been one of the leading lights in the Championship in 2025/26 so far. And they’ll be looking to extend their excellent start on Wednesday when they face crisis club Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough (20:00 BST, live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football).

Rob Edwards has led Boro to their best start in years and will be expected to pocket three more points for his side in S6. Read on to see my Sheffield Wednesday vs Middlesbrough predictions with latest team news and Betfred’s match odds.

Team News

Wednesday’s squad is not so much down to the bare bones as shaving the bones down for scrap, and the goalkeeping situation is the biggest case in point right now.

With first-choice keeper Pierce Charles ruled out following a shoulder operation, the Owls had to jump through all sorts of hoops to bring in Ethan Horvath from Cardiff City on an emergency loan.

But the Bluebirds’ third-choice number one was sent off at Charlton Athletic on Saturday so Wednesday are left scrambling around for another emergency option.

They have been given permission by the EFL to bring in Bristol City’s Joe Lumley on a one-week deal, with 19-year-old rookie Logan Stretch – a veteran of exactly zero senior games – their fall-back alternative.

Football Odds

Elsewhere, Dominic Iorfa should be fit despite an early exit at The Valley with a dead leg caused by a lower-back issue, but the hosts will still be without Di’Shon Bernard, Olaf Kobacki, Rio Shipston, Gui Siqueira, Ernie Weaver and likely Nathaniel Chalobah.

Boro are missing Riley McGree, Darragh Lenihan and George Edmundson but Edwards could stick by the XI which achieved an excellent 2-1 win over Ipswich Town on Friday.

That would mean David Strelec continuing up top, with Delano Burgzorg and Morgan Whittaker adding threat from the wide attacking positions.

Today's Football Fixtures

Sheffield Wednesday vs Middlesbrough Odds

Frankly, Middlesbrough are a fantastic price for the punter at 8/11, which implies a 57.9% probability of them becoming the fifth visiting team in six league games this season to leave Hillsborough with all three points.

Wednesday are 18/5 to finally record their first home win since Easter Monday against… yes, Middlesbrough. It’s 11/4 for a share of the spoils, implying a 26.7% chance.

Strelec and Tommy Conway are the 4/1 joint-favourites to score first.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Middlesbrough Stats

  • Wednesday have scored one goal and conceded 14 in their five home Championship games in 2025/26 (D1, L4)
  • Middlesbrough’s eight goals in away matches (W2, D2, L1) this season have come from eight different players
  • Boro haven’t won at Hillsborough since ‘Project Restart’ in July 2020, losing two of three visits since then (both 2-1)

Handicap: Middlesbrough -2 @ 11/2

Wednesday supporters’ opposition to chairman and owner Dejphon Chansiri will reach a new level for Boro’s visit when a huge swathe of the home fans boycott the fixture.

Until now, widespread absences have been confined to home Carabao Cup matches, but Wednesday night will see an escalation of hostilities.

For a club with just one point from five home matches and 14 goals conceded in that time, the prospect of playing in front of three near-empty home stands can’t be a great one.

Boro should have a bit of a field day against that backdrop, and the Owls have already lost 3-0 on their own patch to Stoke City and Bristol City this season as well as 2-0 and 5-0 defeats against Swansea City and Coventry City respectively.

This should be another big defeat for the Championship’s basement boys, and Edwards is getting a real tune out of Boro right now.

The 11/2 available for Middlesbrough to win by at least three goals at a probability of 15.4% looks extremely generous.

Liam Palmer to receive a card @ 10/3

If there’s one big surprise about Wednesday’s season so far it is that Liam Palmer has only two bookings to his name so far.

The Owls vice-captain is normally the first to commit the ‘professional’ foul when it’s necessary as opponents break on the counter.

In truth, Palmer would not be getting into a Wednesday side achieving their goals of challenging towards the top of the table.

He averages just 17 appearances per season when the Owls finish in the top half of the Championship but starts 29 games for each campaign in the lower half.

This is where the height of his level appears to be, and it is when bigger and stronger teams are attacking Wednesday that ‘LP2’ looks most exposed.

So I’m thinking Palmer is due a yellow card, and Boro have just the sort of attacking lineup which can leave the home side stripped for numbers.

The 10/3 offered by Betfred (23.1%) is punter-friendly in my mind.
