Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday both have much to fight for in the final weeks of the Championship season. The Bluebirds are battling for survival and they hover just one point above the relegation zone, while Wednesday are six points off the play-offs. The two teams square up at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday (15:00).

Below you will find my Cardiff vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions, which are supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Cardiff have a few fitness concerns heading into the weekend. Aaron Ramsey and Jak Alnwick are both out of action with hamstring issues. The former has been plagued with injuries this term and has only been able to make six starts for the Bluebirds.

Alnwick is expected to be out for the rest of the season so Ethan Horvath is uncontested between the sticks for the foreseeable future. Jesper Daland hasn't featured for the club since picking up a leg injury against Stoke City in the FA Cup fourth round on February 8. He remains a doubt to feature.

Ollie Tanner is another doubt, with the attacker having been missing since the 3-0 win over rivals Swansea City on January 18. Alex Robertson has fitness concerns of his own but the precise issue remains unknown.

Despite Cardiff's troubles, forward Callum Robinson has still been able to bag 12 goals in the Championship this season, and he looks to be their best chance at staying up this year.

Cardiff vs Sheffield Wednesday Stats

  • Cardiff have scored in each of their last eight home games in the Championship
  • Sheffield Wednesday have won four of their past six away games in the second tier

Wednesday are hopeful that the international break has helped them with their squad health. Max Lowe and Di'Shon Bernard are their only long-term absentees but the Owls are quietly confident that Stuart Armstrong, Yan Valery and Akin Famewo can return to action this weekend, with each of them having resumed training.

The latter has been getting minutes under his belt with the under-21s to aid him in his recovery from a thigh muscle injury that has kept him out for five months.

Cardiff vs Sheffield Wednesday Odds

Cardiff have lost three of their previous four games in the league coming into this clash, so I wouldn't recommend backing them at 15/8.

The Bluebirds earned a point against the visitors in the reverse fixture at Hillsborough back in November, and the draw is priced at 23/10 on this occasion.

Sheffield Wednesday have won four of their last six away trips in the Championship and they are 6/4, which has an implied probability of 40%, to come away with the three points on Saturday.

Both teams to score was a successful bet when the two teams met earlier in the campaign, and it has also struck in Cardiff's four latest appearances in the second tier. BTTS can be backed at 4/5 (55.6%).

Sheffield Wednesday to win @ 6/4

Cardiff are in real danger of relegation and while their recent win at Blackburn Rovers before the international break will have given them some relief, I don't expect it to change things too much, especially against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Bluebirds are 21st in the table but based on home games alone, they are 22nd. Of the 19 games they have played at the Cardiff City Stadium, they have collected just 24 points.

Only Wednesday (22) and Hull City (19) have less points at home this season. For whatever reason, the Owls have been performing significantly better on their travels.

They are fifth in the standings based on away matches this term, with 29 points from 19 games. Danny Rohl's players seem to be at their best on the road with nine wins under their belt. Only Sheffield United (12) and Burnley (11) have won more away fixtures than Wednesday, which is rather impressive.

If they mirrored that form at Hillsborough there would be no doubt about their position in the play-offs. They are six points adrift currently but their run-in is favourable. They will be feeling confident ahead of their trip to South Wales, having won four of their previous six away contests in the Championship, including each of their last two.

I think they are worth backing to take the victory in this one as a result.

Cardiff vs Sheffield Wednesday - Match Result Sheffield Wednesday

Both teams to score @ 4/5

Cardiff can play their part in this contest, however, especially as they are desperate to pull themselves away from relegation danger. I think BTTS is a worthy selection for this match because the hosts have scored in each of their previous eight home games in the second tier.

This market has also struck in their last four games (home and away) coming into this weekend. I may not think they will have enough to beat a Wednesday side that loving playing away from Hillsborough, but form suggests they can at least get on the scoresheet.
