Bristol City vs Hull Prediction: Struber to add to Hull’s pain?

Gerhard Struber has overseen an unbeaten start of the Championship season at Bristol City, as the Robins have picked up two draws since that eye-catching 4-1 win at Bramall Lane. This Saturday, they host a Hull City outfit (15:00) that were dismantled by Blackburn Rovers at home last time out, but have four points to their name.

Team News
Bristol City were one of several Championship teams that lost in the Carabao Cup in midweek, but Struber won’t be too concerned by the exit to Premier League outfit Fulham. Emil Riis Jakobsen, Scott Twine and Anis Mehmeti will hope to hold onto their attacking roles in this 3-4-3, although Sinclair Armstrong is pushing for a start up top.
Robert Atkinson, Rob Dickie and Zak Vyner should make up the back three once again, with Manchester United loanee Radek Vítek looking like the first-choice goalkeeper in the early stages of the season. With how United’s current crop are getting on, he might be the best one on their books right now as well.
Bristol City vs Hull Stats
- Bristol City are unbeaten in the Championship (W1 D2)
- Hull lost 3-0 at home to Blackburn last time out
- Scott Twine has scored three in three league matches
For Hull, a painful 3-0 defeat at home to Blackburn could force Sergej Jakirovic to make changes. Brandon Williams came off the bench in that defeat and could be thrust into the XI after arriving last week, while Joe Gelhardt and Oli McBurnie pose the most attacking threat but underperformed against Rovers.
Mohamed Belloumi also returned off the bench as he continues to get minutes after suffering an ACL injury last term, while Liam Millar remains out with the same injury. Kasey Palmer could keep his place in the number 10 role, while all eyes will be on key centre-back Charlie Hughes. He missed the defeat to Blackburn and has been the subject of transfer speculation all summer, so it will be interesting to see if he is named on the teamsheet on Saturday.
Bristol City are the 9/10 favourites to win this game, giving them an implied win probability of 53% for this home fixture. Hull are 16/5 to come away with all three points while a draw can be backed at 12/5.
Over 2.5 goals is 11/10, BTTS is 10/11 and Armstrong and Mehmeti and the joint-favourites to open the scoring at 5/1.
Bristol City to win @ 9/10
I will play this fixture with a straight bat, and simply back Bristol City to win on home soil. I’ve been impressed with the early work we have seen under Struber, and the unbeaten start to the season has given fans belief that the departure of Liam Manning hasn’t rocked the boat too much.
The high-pressing style is exciting to watch, while only a late Carlton Morris goal denied them all three points at Derby. They could do with being as clinical as they were at Bramall Lane when they ran away as 4-1 winners on the opening weekend, but up against a Hull City side that still has questions to answer, they will be confident. That Blackburn result could be massively damaging for the Tigers, and without Hughes at the back they look like a different team. I’ll back the home side at a short price.

Scorecast - Bristol City 1-0 Hull, Scott Twine to score @ 28/1
Despite my confidence in the home side, I do think this will be a low-scoring affair so I will back them to secure a 1-0 win. They’ve not blown teams away since hitting four past Sheffield United, and they even lost the xG battle that day - while they have created 0.73 and 0.74xG in the two draws since.
They are unlikely to score three or four against Hull, who themselves will want to put things right after a poor showing against Blackburn. The Tigers only created an xG of 0.52 in that defeat, so let’s back them to fail to score again. To boost our odds and make this a scorecast, I’ve picked out Twine as the sole goalscorer. His set-pieces are phenomenal, and he already has three goals from three in the Championship this term.
Could be a big winner.
