Birmingham City will look for an immediate response in the Championship when they host Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday (19:45 BST, Sky Sports+). The Blues suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at Coventry City on Saturday, making it three away wins on the bounce in the league.

Wednesday head to the West Midlands off the back of a home draw against Queens Park Rangers, and a win at Portsmouth before that. Below you will find my Birmingham vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions, supported by the latest team news and match odds.

Team News

Birmingham are waiting to see the extent of the injury attacker Marvin Ducksch picked up in the warm-up before the defeat at Coventry City. Lyndon Dykes, the hero against Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City, came in to replace him up front.

The Scotsman may keep his place in the XI but Chris Davies may turn to Kyogo Furuhashi as his side have only managed five goals in the league thus far.

Ethan Laird is a doubt to feature after pulling up at the weekend, while Jay Stansfield appeared to pick up a knock of his own.

Davies will be forced into a change at the back following Jack Robinson's sending off, so Phil Neumann is expected to return to the back four. The same could be the case for Alex Cochrane if Laird misses out.

Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop could be at risk of being dropped for former Wednesday loanee James Beadle on Tuesday, with Allsop making a couple of big errors at Coventry.

The midfield pairing of Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-ho has not been working for much of this season, so there may be a chance for Tommy Doyle and Mark Leonard to stake a claim in midweek.

Lee Buchanan, Scott Wright (both knee) remain sidelined for the hosts, while Willum Willumsson is set to miss out again with an unspecified issue. Keshi Anderson might be available for selection again after a month out.

Football Odds

Wednesday are missing quite a few players due to injury. Di'Shon Bernard remains sidelined with an ACL problem. Guilherme Siqueira (Achilles), Pierce Charles (shoulder) and Olaf Kobacki (groin) are also missing for the Owls.

Bruno Fernandes is hoping to return to the first-team picture soon after overcoming an injury to feature for the U21s. The same goes for Nathaniel Chalobah who is back in training after an injury picked up on the opening weekend of the season.

Reece Johnson is back available after having stitches in his foot. Ernie Weaver picked up a knock against QPR on Saturday but he should be fine to feature at Birmingham.

Today's Football Fixtures

Birmingham vs Sheffield Wednesday Odds

Birmingham have won their last two home games in the Championship and they are 2/5 to pick up the three points here.

Sheffield Wednesday have drawn two of their seven contests in the second tier so far, and the stalemate is marketed at 7/2.

The Owls are 15/2 to pull off an upset in B9 and they did win on their last away trip to Portsmouth, while they had the chances to win when they drew at Wrexham last month.

At least one team has failed to score in three of the past four head-to-head meetings between the two clubs. BTTS - No is priced at 4/6.

Birmingham vs Sheffield Wednesday Stats

  • Birmingham have lost three of their last four games
  • The Blues are unbeaten at home
  • Wednesday have taken four points in their last two matches
  • The Owls are unbeaten in their previous two away outings
  • Under 2.5 goals has struck in all league matches at St. Andrew's this season

Draw or Sheffield Wednesday @ 9/5

As a Birmingham fan, it doesn't feel good to be writing this. The Blues may sit 11th in the table and just three points off second but it doesn't feel that way.

Coventry marked the third consecutive defeat on the road in the league and while there was a late win at Blackburn in August, it was another game away from home in which Birmingham didn't turn in a good performance overall.

It's a concerning trend almost two months into the season. Davies is not escaping criticism despite last season's record-breaking season in League 1. The step up in opponents so far has been telling and Birmingham are no longer having things their own way.

Goalscoring chances are difficult to come by at the moment, and that applies both home and away, while they have conceded some poor goals, too.

Whether the system needs tweaking or he's been short-changed by recruitment (which does appear the case with no back-ups at left-back or defensive midfield), something is in need of changing to get the team looking how they did on opening night against Ipswich Town - and if their plan really is to get promoted at the first attempt.

On paper, their squad depth easily out-muscles that of Sheffield Wednesday, but like any other opponent, the Owls cannot be underestimated.

They were largely competitive at Leicester City on the opening weekend, while they really should've beaten Wrexham before landing an impressive win at Portsmouth.

Birmingham are unbeaten at home in the league across 28 matches going back to the 2023/24 campaign, but I think there's a chance it can come to an end on Tuesday.

Despite all the adversity thrown their way, Wednesday are giving the Championship a good go and I do think they should have a couple more points than the five they have so far.

They are a team who know exactly what they are doing, which can't be said of their hosts right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see them get a result.

Under 2.5 goals @ 10/11

On the road may be a different story but at home, Birmingham are a much more organised defensive unit, with just one goal conceded at St. Andrew's in three league appearances this term.

The Blues have kept Oxford United and Swansea City at bay, while the sole goal conceded was from the penalty spot against Ipswich. I have already made my points for why I think the visitors could be in for some joy in this match, but I don't it will affect the current goal trend at this ground.

Additionally, Wednesday have experienced under 2.5 goals in each of their last three games in all competitions heading into this clash, and this is another trend I think we will see continue on Tuesday night.
