Championship 2024/25 Season Review: Sportsman Untitled panel review epic campaign
We’ve finally reached the end of the Championship season and in their final show of 2024/25, the Sportsman Untitled panel meet to dissect the entire campaign.
Host Simon Lillibury is joined by EFL expert Gab Sutton and Conor McGilligan as they talk about every single team in the Championship this term. Below you can find the Championship 2024/25 Season Review.
The boys start by discussing the dramatic play-off final, which saw Sunderland score a last-minute winner to seal an unlikely promotion. The Black Cats had finished fourth, a whopping 14 points behind fellow finalists Sheffield United, and the gap between the two sides seemed apparent for the first 70 minutes.
Tyrese Campbell gave the Blades the lead, and VAR ruled out Harrison Burrows’ second, as Chris Wilder’s men spurned chance after chance to double their advantage. They were made to pay for their wastefulness as Eliezer Mayenda equalised, before a loose pass from Kieffer Moore was capitalised upon by Tom Watson, who scored that wonderful late winner.
On this episode, there’s contributions from Sunderland fan Jonny from Roker Report, and Oli Mann from Sheff United Way - both of whom have obviously experienced very different weekends at Wembley.
But the show isn’t just about the play-off finalists, we discuss every single team in the Championship in a bumper episode, while we even touch upon the three promoted clubs, Birmingham City, Wrexham and Charlton Athletic and their aspirations for next term.
Leeds United and Burnley were two of the finest teams we have ever seen in the Championship, both hitting 100 points, and Daniel Farke and Scott Parker rightfully took the plaudits for memorable campaigns. Coventry City and Bristol City lost in the play-off semi-finals and will hope to keep their spots in the top six next term, while the likes of Norwich City, West Brom and Middlesbrough will hope to crack those play-off places after disappointing years.
At the other end of the table, Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle and shockingly - Luton Town, were all relegated, with each club facing various issues across the season. Hull City and Watford have parted company with their managers despite both staying in the league, while Norwich could poach Liam Manning from Bristol City this summer having recently let Johannes Hoff Thorup go.
There’s so much to talk about up and down the table, with big praise for Oxford United, Portsmouth and Derby County, who all stayed in the division having been promoted from League 1 last term. Birmingham and Wrexham will have big ambitions and a hefty amount of money to spend too, so we could see a real shake-up in the race for the play-offs in 2025/26.
