Tottenham vs Atletico Madrid Prediction: Spurs to win but still fall short

The Igor Tudor reign in North London continues after Tottenham's spirited 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Sunday. How much spirit can they show against Atlético Madrid on Wednesday evening? The thought of making further progress in Europe is tempting but it may be to the detriment of their league survival bid.

That is not to suggest that Spurs' 5-2 mauling at the hands of Atlético Madrid last week was all part of Tudor's tactical plan - that would be giving the Croat far too much credit. At the same time, he should be credited for overseeing the stalemate on Merseyside and it will be interesting to see if that leads to a boost in confidence going into the second leg of this Champions League tie...

Team News

Igor Tudor would have certainly learned his lesson after making a first leg goalkeeper switch. Antonin Kinsky's confidence crushing cameo in Madrid means Guglielmo Vicario will start the home tie. The Italian not necessarily brimming with confidence himself in recent weeks, consider him the least worst option available.

While the other 10 players selected may be the only options available. Igor Tudor's selection torment easing ever so slightly thanks to Micky van de Ven's eligibility to play. The Dutch defender out suspended for last Sunday's draw at Liverpool, he will slot straight back into a centre half position alongside Austrian international Kevin Danso.

As for visitors Atlético Madrid, their pair of chief tormentors from last week's clash at the Wanda Metropolitano are expected to start in attack. Both Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann set to lead the line for Diego Simeone's after scoring in the first leg. It would be easier to list who did not score in that 5-2 win.

Another of the goalscorers that night was Robin Le Normand and he will be tasked with making sure the job nearly done is a job complete at full-time. The Spanish international has made nine appearances in Europe this season, scoring twice. Expect him to be partnered by David Hancko at centre back.

Tottenham vs Atletico Madrid Predicted Lineups

  • Tottenham: Vicario, Porro, Danso, van de Ven, Spence, Gray, Gallagher, Sarr, Tel, Kolo Muani, Solanke
  • Atletico Madrid: Musso, Pubill, Le Normand, Hancko, Ruggeri, Simeone, Cardoso, Llorente, Lookman, Alvarez, Griezmann

Tottenham vs Atlético Madrid Odds

Tottenham are priced at 6/4 to win this game, with Atlético Madrid listed at the same odds. That gives both sides an implied win probability of 40% while a draw can be backed at 3/1.

BTTS has been priced at 4/6 and over 2.5 goals is 8/11, while Dominic Solanke is the favourite to score of the likely starters at 5/1. Should teammate Richarlison get the nod, he can also be backed at the same price.

 Tottenham vs Atlético Madrid Stats

  • Atlético Madrid have made 11 Champions League appearances this season and have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of them.
  • Tottenham are still looking for their first win under interim boss Igor Tudor (D1 L4).

Tottenham to win @ 6/4

Although a 5-2 defeat is always going to be difficult to digest, the three-goal deficit just about keeps the tie alive for Tottenham. Therefore, Igor Tudor's men are going to have to be on the front foot if they are to have any hopes of making progress in the Champions League.

Can they do the unthinkable and knock Atlético Madrid out when sitting behind the proverbial eight-ball? Personally, I do not see it. However, there will be an element of chest puffed out after their 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Sunday and due to that, I think they will just fall short after a winning position in the second leg.

Tottenham over 1.5 goals @ 11/10

Which also dovetails into my second bet and although I am putting all of my eggs in a Spurs shaped basket before Wednesday night's clash in North London, I feel it is for good reason. Atletico's attacking prowess is not to be overlooked but they definitely have leaks in their defence at the other end.

Leaks that even Spurs exposed in the first leg and although it would be easy to back both teams to score by virtue of Atletico failing to keep a clean sheet in this season's Champions League, I think I can find a more tempting option.

Diego Simeone's men might need a goal of their own for breathing space in the tie and if Tottenham are to win, this means at least two goals for the hosts on Wednesday.
