Rb leipzig vs sporting cp - 22nd january 2025

One of the two early games in the Champions League this Wednesday evening comes from Germany as RB Leipzig entertain Sporting CP. TNT Sports 4 is the place to go for live coverage from 17:45. Leipzig are a side with no points on the board at all whereas the visitors have aspirations to move on to the next phase.

Jamie Pacheco thinks it’s a tricky match to call in terms of the final outcome so is eyeing up a Bet Builder instead for his betting tip and his RB Leipzig vs Sporting CP Prediction...

RB Leipzig

Leipzig's campaign has been nothing short of disaster so far, losing all six games, meaning the only things they still have to play for are pride, and prize money. They've conceded 13 and scored just six but you can argue they've been just a tad unlucky because five of those six losses were by a single goal.

Proof that they're not a bad side is that they're currently fifth in the Bundesliga, one of the most competitive leagues out there and could well qualify for next year's edition of the Champions League, where they'd certainly hope to get better results than they did this time round.

It's been a mixed set of results on the domestic front of late, losing two, winning one and drawing one across their last four.

Possible XI:  Gulacsi, Orban, Seiwald, Klostermann, Baku, Veremmeren, Raum, Kampl, Nusa, Sesko, Baumgartner.

Sporting CP

Now that one of the more disastrous spells for an interim manager in recent memory is over, they can get back to the business of trying to win the league and earn priceless money in this competition. Joao Pereira's time in charge showed that quite frankly, he was well out of his depth. At least Sporting realised their mistake pretty quickly and replaced him with the far more experienced and streetwise Rui Borges.

Sporting are 17th, meaning they're the best of the teams on course to qualify for the Play-Offs as an unseeded team. But a win here would go a long way to change that and at least allow them to contest the Play-offs as a seeded team, if not automatically qualify for the Last 16. That last match is against Bologna, so two wins, which is perfectly plausible, could see them avoid that Play-off round altogether.

It's been an interesting last month for them. A huge win against Benfica in the context of the title race (1-0) was followed by a 4-4 draw at Guimaraes, then that defeat to Benfica in the League Cup and a 3-0 win against Rio Ave at the weekend.

Viktor Gyokeres carries on scoring goals for fun. It's now 30 for the season from 26 matches. How Ruben Amorim wishes he had his old golden boy at Old Trafford.

Possible XI: Israel, Araujo, Fresneda, Inacio, Diomande, Catamo, Debast, Hjulmand, Quenda, Trincao, Gyokeres.

RB Leipzig vs Sporting CP Odds

Leipzig are 9/5 (implied probability 35.7%) with Sporting 11/8 (42%) and the draw 13/5 (27.8%).

If you just considered the league table, you could argue that's a decent price on the visitors against a side who's lost all six. But as we said already, the German outfit have been a bit unlucky in losing so many matches by the single goal and perhaps deserved a bit of fortune at some stage. They may finally get it here.

So, logic dictates that the side who has performed far better in the competition and has far higher motivation levels should win this, but things don't always turnout like that; Leipzig or the draw is a 4/7 shot on the Double Chance market.

Bet Builder

Leipzig have managed to get five or more corners in five of their six matches to date so the 10/11 they get over 4.5 corners in this one looks a pretty safe bet and makes up he first part of our Bet Builder.

For the second, we turn to that man, Gyokeres. He's averaging over a goal a game this season, has five in this competition and may even have particularly high levels of motivation going into this one if he's eyeing up a January move. The 21/20 he scores here is a perfectly decent price, bringing the Bet Builder up to odds of 1.91/1.
