Barcelona and Atlético Madrid meet for the fourth time in 2026 on Wednesday night, four days on from an ill-tempered encounter in La Liga.

The outcome of that match will have no real bearing on what happens in this Champions League quarter-final. With Atleti playing for little in the league, Diego Simeone rested many of his regulars, and it wasn't a great surprise to see title-chasing Barça ultimately triumph 2-1 at the Estadio Metropolitano.

A feisty affair did nicely set the stage for what's to come over the next week. There had already been one major flashpoint, which saw players from both sides square up by the time Nico González was sent off late in the first half. Gerard Martín was also shown a red card for the visitors for a full-blooded challenge just after the interval, although, to Atleti's dismay, it was downgraded to a yellow after a controversial VAR review.

Even with a host of their best players missing, Los Rojiblancos showed enough in that match to suggest they are going to be competitive in this European tie. They can also take confidence from a 4-3 aggregate win against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey earlier this year.

Going further back, Atleti's two runs to the Champions League final in the 2010s included quarter-final victories over the Catalan giants. However, it's safe to say that this is now a very different era at both of these clubs.

This is no longer the defensively-minded Atlético Madrid of yesteryear that might have been capable of heading to Camp Nou and grinding out a low-scoring draw. They've lost some of the ingredients that made them such awkward opponents on the European stage a decade ago, but this side is a more exciting one.

They are averaging 2.58 goals per 90 minutes in the 2025/26 Champions League, but are yet to keep a clean sheet in 12 outings. Simeone's men head into this game on the back of three straight defeats in all competitions, but they also competed well in a 3-2 Madrid derby loss at the Santiago Bernabéu just before the international break.

Barcelona will be determined to make home advantage count in the first leg. They've won every fixture in front of their own fans since returning to Camp Nou in November. That includes two victories over Atleti. The combined score from those two matches was 6-1 in Barça's favour, while they created 6.82 xG across 180 minutes of football, compared to their opponents' 1.61.

Raphinha did start on each of those occasions, but if they're to advance from this tie, the reigning Spanish champions will need to do it without the influential Brazilian.

Marcus Rashford is his most obvious deputy, and the Englishman impressed in the league meeting at the weekend, scoring a nicely-worked equaliser as he combined with Dani Olmo, who started the game as a false nine.

Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to grab a late winner. With four goals in his last five games for club and country, Barça will be hoping the veteran striker is coming into form at just the right time.

Team News:

Atlético Madrid are expected to make at least five changes from the side that started on Saturday, and it could be more than that if the likes of Jan Oblak and Marc Pubill can recover from fitness issues in time to play.

Julián Alvarez, Ademola Lookman and Dávid Hancko should all start having not even made it off the bench in the league clash. They have ongoing injury doubts over José María Giménez, Johnny Cardoso and Pablo Barrios.

As for Barcelona, Raphinha is a major absentee, while they have problems in midfield too, after Marc Bernal picked up an ankle injury at the weekend. With Frenkie de Jong still struggling with a hamstring issue, Eric García is likely to be deployed in the centre of the park.

Lewandowski and Jules Koundé should come into the side, having only featured off the bench at the Metropolitano, with Olmo and Ronald Araújo most likely dropping out.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Predicted Lineups

  • Barcelona: J. Garcia, Kounde, Cubarsi, Martin, Cancelo, E. Garcia, Pedri, Yamal, Fermin, Rashford, Lewandowski
  • Atletico Madrid: Oblak, Llorente, Le Normand, Hancko, Ruggeri, Koke, Baena; Simeone, Griezmann, Lookman, Alvarez

Match Odds:

Barcelona are priced at 8/15 to win the first leg of this tie. You can back the Draw at 4/1, while Atlético Madrid are given a 4/1 chance of claiming a rare win at Camp Nou.

For bigger potential returns on the hosts, you can back Barcelona to win and Both teams to score at 7/5. They are also priced at 13/10 with a -1.00 Handicap, while you can back Flick's side to score over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Alternatively, Draw or Atlético Madrid is on offer at 7/5 in the Double Chance market. The visitors are given a 13/8 chance of scoring over 1.5 goals, while they're priced at 8/5 to win either half.

Lewandowski leads the way as the 7/2 favourite to score first, while you can back the ex-Bayern man to net anytime at 9/10. Lamine Yamal is available at 1/1 to score anytime, while you can back Rashford to get on the scoresheet at 7/5.

Alvarez should lead the line for the visitors, and despite a poor season in La Liga, he has scored eight times in 11 Champions League appearances. The Argentine is priced at 15/2 to score first, and 2/1 to score anytime.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid Stats

  • Atletico (30) have perhaps surprisingly scored more CL goals than Barcelona (29) - although from two extra matches.
  • Only Newcastle (5) have been awarded more penalties in the CL than Barcelona (4).
  • Both clubs have scored from 15% of their shots in this competition.

Bet 1 - Barcelona to win & Most corners - Barcelona  @ 20/21

Barcelona are on a 17-game winning streak at home in all competitions. That record is hard to ignore and their superiority on the two occasions when they've hosted Atlético Madrid already this season also strongly points to them working up a first-leg advantage.

They won the corner count by a 15-0 margin when the clubs last met at Camp Nou. There were also nine Barça corners to Atleti's one at the weekend. Even when the side from the Spanish capital won 4-0 at the Metropolitano in the Copa del Rey earlier this year, it was still Flick's team that won the corner count.

Given that, I'm using the Bet Builder to back Barcelona to win and Barcelona to have the most corners at 20/21.

Bet 2 - Matteo Ruggeri 2+ fouls @ 11/10

Simeone opted to start a winger at left-back on Saturday, and must have almost immediately regretted it. González was made to look out of his depth in the role on a number of occasions by Yamal. He had already been booked for the most deliberate of handballs to stop the teenager breaking, by the time of his red card on the stroke of half-time for a mistimed challenge on the Barça winger.

Matteo Ruggeri will be tasked with stopping the 18-year-old on Wednesday night. While he is a natural in the role, it's still going to be a really tough night for the Italian up against a player who frequently delivers on the big Champions League stage.

Without Raphinha, Barcelona may send even more balls down the right flank to Yamal to attack the left side of Atleti's defence, which has been an area of vulnerability this term. Given that, I'm backing Ruggeri to commit two or more fouls at 11/10.
