Atletico Madrid vs Spurs Prediction: No Goals for Spurs in Madrid

Do Tottenham really need further European exploits? That is the dilemma facing the club right now. The prospect of going deeper in the Champions League is enticing but when you consider their Premier League plight at present, this may be a distraction that only causes them further misery at home.
Tonight sees them travel to the Spanish capital of Madrid. Atlético await at the Wanda Metropolitano. Diego Simeone’s men making the Round of 16 after eventually getting the better of Club Brugge in the playoffs. Much has been made of the might of English teams in this competition, can this Spanish outfit show their muscle? Dan Tracey brings us his Atlético Madrid vs Spurs Predictions here on Betfred Insights...

Team News
Hosts Atlético will have to do without Rodrigo Mendoza this evening, the January signing was substituted at half-time in the recent clash with Real Sociedad. His absence not just for the first leg of this tie but the 20-year-old is also unlikely to be fit for the return clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Not the only injury concern for Atlético boss Diego Simeone to worry about but it may be better news as far as Pablo Barrios is concerned. His recent hamstring injury looks to be dealt with and he could be called to the bench for the visit of Spurs. Should he be fit, he will likely be alongside French international Antoine Griezmann who could make an impact later in the game.
Micky van de Ven may be suspended for the weekend trip to Liverpool but Tottenham interim boss Igor Tudor can at least count on him for tonight's trip to Madrid. The Dutch international is expected to one of three centre backs deployed at the Wanda Metropolitano as Spurs' injury woes continues.
Three at the back and also two expected up top. For the past couple of seasons, it has usually been a case of either Richarlison or Dominic Solanke playing through the middle - a decision often enforced by injury to either. Now, with both strikers fit and fully available, they will each be tasked with causing the Atlético defence problems.

Atlético Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur Stats
- This is the first time the two teams have met in the Champions League. However, Spurs did get the better of Atlético Madrid in the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.
- Atletico Madrid have not kept a single clean sheet in this season’s edition of the Champions League.
Atlético Madrid to win to nil @ 7/4
I am not suggesting that Spurs chuck this game in just a few hours but if they are to enhance their hopes of staying in the Premier League at the end of the season, they must exit the Champions League as soon as possible. Getting the better of Atlético Madrid cannot be considered as top priority for Igor Tudor's men.
Which I think will play nicely into Atletico's hands. Admittedly they have not been their usual defensive selves in Europe this season, a clean sheet missing from any of their outings. However, this will be the perfect opportunity in which to earn their first. Not only that, but I think they will win without any issues.

Julian Alvarez to score anytime @ 13/10
If the game pans out in the way I expect it to, then goals will be the focus for Atlético Madrid. The focus that I am placing on Julian Alvarez. The former Manchester City forward was linked with a move to Arsenal in January, I expect him to cause further anguish for the Gunners' North London rivals.
Alvarez has scored 13 goals this season (La Liga and Champions League) and perhaps more importantly, five of those have come in Europe's elite competition. Nine starts, a quintet of goals on the way to the Round of 16. One more tonight and it will help Atletico's bid to reach the quarter-finals.
