The Championship’s relegation battle has been blown wide open. After picking up an impressive point with 10-men against Leeds United, Huddersfield Town’s quest for survival takes them to Cardiff City on Wednesday night (19:45, Sky Sports Red Button).

André Breitenreiter has only officially been in charge for two matches, but Town have picked up four points during that time and remain outside of the relegation zone, just. Having only lost two of their last nine matches, they’ve given themselves hope as they travel to south Wales to face 11th-placed Cardiff.

Below we have previewed the game and given our Cardiff vs Huddersfield prediction, along with a couple of betting tips.

Huddersfield vs Cardiff Tips

  • Under 2.5 goals @ 8/13
  • Huddersfield to win @ 2/1

Team News

Callum Robinson and Karlan Grant remain out for Cardiff, but Erol Bulut should be able to name the same side that beat Bristol City at the weekend. Callum O’Dowda came off the bench in that one after his injury lay-off, while 22-year-old Kion Etete is expected to continue up front.

Jonathan Hogg is suspended for the visitors having been sent off against Leeds last time out, while Yuta Nakayama will miss this one through injury. Breitenreiter also has a number of long-term absentees to contend with, as Rhys Healey, Oliver Turton, Josh Ruffels and Radinio Balker all remain sidelined.

Match Odds

Cardiff are priced as the favourites for this one, at 7/5, while Huddersfield are 2/1 to take all three points. A draw is priced at 11/5, BTTS is 5/6 and over 2.5 goals is 6/5.

Under 2.5 goals @ 8/13

Remarkably, Huddersfield have actually scored one more goal than Cardiff have this season. That’s not to say the Terriers have been free-scoring, they’ve bagged 41 in 35 games in comparison to Cardiff’s 40. Bulut has struggled to make his side entertaining and with a -8 goal difference it feels more by luck than judgement that they find themselves in the top half of the table.

I don’t think they will end the season in the top 12, and even after back-to-back wins, I’m not convinced by the Welsh outfit. They’ve beaten a woeful Stoke side, and Bristol City away from home in their last two, but I believe Huddersfield will be able to give them a far tougher game than either of those two.

Two of the last three Cardiff games have ended with one goal or less, while Huddersfield also kept Leeds down to just one goal, even with 10 men. It’s a relatively short price, but I’m happy to back this game to be a tight encounter.

Huddersfield to win @ 2/1

The Terriers, who looked dead and buried earlier in the season, have been playing really well since the start of February. They should have got something against Southampton, and have only lost narrowly to the Saints and play-off candidates Hull City during this time.

I’m completely on board with Huddersfield at this moment and would be happy to back them to get something against almost any team in the division. We saw them put in a terrific battling performance at home against Leeds and against a far weaker side, I think they will go and get three points. I’d back them at a far shorter price than 2/1, so am more than happy to plump for them at this price.
