Newcastle United welcome Brentford to St James' Park in their quarter-final meeting of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday (19:45, Sky Sports+). The Magpies were 2-0 victors at home to Chelsea in the previous round and they will be confident in taking down another west London club.

The Bees progressed via a penalty shoot-out against Sheffield Wednesday to book their place in the quarter-finals so they will need to be a lot better if they are to defeat Newcastle in their own backyard. Read on for my Newcastle United vs Brentford prediction, alongside the latest match odds and team news.

Newcastle United vs Brentford Betting Tips

  • Newcastle and both teams to score @ 9/5
  • Harvey Barnes anytime goalscorer @ 6/4

Newcastle United vs Brentford Odds

Newcastle are 4/7 to win this match in 90 minutes, which gives them an implied probability of 63.6%. Their last two wins in this competition have come on home soil and they have been beaten just twice in eight appearances here in the Premier League this season.

Brentford are valued at 9/2 (18.2%) to take the victory because they are yet to win a game away from home in the top flight. Their only away win came in the second round of this competition against League 2 side Colchester United.

If you think this tie will not be settled in regulation time, the draw is on offer at 100/30 (23.1%), which has landed just twice at St James' Park this term.

Both teams have found the back of the net in six of the Bees' away matches in the league this campaign despite their lack of success on the road. It was a winning selection at the Gtech Community Stadium a few weeks as well when these two sides met in the top flight. It is priced at 8/13 for this clash.

Team News

Martin Dubravka is set to continue between the sticks for Newcastle as first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope looks set for a few weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury. Jamaal Lascelles (ACL) is still a little while away in his recovery but fellow defender Sven Botman, who has been out with the same injury, is nearing a comeback.

The Dutchman played an Under-21s game on Monday as he starts to build up his match fitness. However, this game will come too soon for him. Full-back Emil Krafth remains out with a broken collarbone which he suffered at the hands of Dubravka in training, according to reports.

Injury-plagued Callum Wilson suffered another setback last week. Boss Eddie Howe revealed that the striker had picked up a hamstring injury that could rule him out for up to two months. The former AFC Bournemouth man has featured just four times this season so far.

Howe was critical of Brazilian Joelinton after he picked up his fifth Premier League yellow card of the season against Leicester City at the weekend, after he was told to be careful by his boss. His suspension will be served against Ipswich Town at the weekend, so he will be available to play against the Bees on Wednesday.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank welcomed back midfielder Vitaly Janely at the weekend after he was absent against the Magpies a fortnight ago, but Mathias Jensen doesn't look like he will be fit in time to return to action in this cup tie. The Dane has missed the last three matches with a hamstring problem.

Josh Dasilva (knee), Rico Henry (ACL) and Aaron Hickey (hamstring) are the other Brentford stars confined to the infirmary, and all are not expected back until some point in the new year.

Newcastle and both teams to score @ 9/5

After a resounding 4-0 home victory against the Foxes at the weekend, and their 2-0 win over an impressive Chelsea side in the round of 16, Newcastle will be feeling confident ahead of this clash.

Howe has already led the Magpies to the final of this competition which they lost to Manchester United in 2022/23. Last year they made it to this stage, so he and the players will be hoping to surpass that.

They have an excellent opportunity because of how poorly Brentford have fared on the road this season. Not one win away from home with seven from eight ending up in defeat. St James' Park is a very tough place to go to when trying to turn such fortunes around, and I think this will wind up being another disappointing day out for the Bees.

Newcastle will see this competition as a great opportunity to claim their first major trophy since 1955. I'm expecting them to name a strong XI for this match, while I think there may be some form of rotation from the visitors.

I think we will see a strong attacking front three from the Magpies featuring Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and most likely Harvey Barnes. This trio alone can wreak havoc on a Brentford defence that has shipped 16 goals away from home in the top flight this term.

The visitors can also cause Newcastle some problems, just like they did at home in the league a couple of weeks ago. They hit the Magpies for four while conceding two in the process. It would suggest that we could be in for a few goals on Wednesday but given the circumstances, I think it will be Newcastle on the right end of the result this time around.

I've added both teams to score because it has been so frequent in Brentford's away games this season, and after they fired four past this team not so long ago, I'm confident we will see it strike again.

Harvey Barnes anytime goalscorer @ 6/4

Newcastle winger Barnes was limited to a second-half appearance at the weekend, which would suggest he could come in from the start against Brentford. The former Leicester man has struggled to get a rhythm going this season because Howe has chopped and changed the front three regularly, and it is usually Barnes that suffers the most.

He has constantly swapped the starting XI with the bench but he has still managed to score five goals in 16 league appearances this term. He has already matched last season's tally but of course he missed half the campaign due to injury.

The 27-year-old is very quick on the break and has shown he has composure in the final third, so he could be primed to play a key role in this quarter-final. This game will offer him a chance to show Howe why he deserves to start more in the league and what sends a stronger message than a goal from an attacking player?

I think there is decent value to be had in him finding the back of the net against a side that notoriously struggle on the road.
