Huddersfield vs Manchester City Prediction: Citizens to have too much for the Terriers

Huddersfield Town will be hoping to pull off another upset in the Carabao Cup when they host Manchester City at Accu Stadium on Wednesday (19:45 BST, Sky Sports Premier League) in the third round.

The Terriers have already beaten Leicester City and Sunderland to reach this point, and now they will look to best Pep Guardiola's side. My Huddersfield vs Manchester City predictions can be found below, as well as the latest team news and match odds.

Huddersfield vs Manchester City Betting Tips

Team News

Huddersfield are without the services of Mickel Miller, Antony Evans, Jack Whatmough, Herbie Kane and Jacob Chapman on Wednesday due to various issues, while Lynden Gooch and Marcus McGuane are considered doubts.

Boss Lee Grant may be tempted to field a similar side to the one that defeated both Leicester City and Sunderland in rounds one and two respectively, including Daniel Vost and David Kasumu in the engine room.

Up front, top scorer Joe Taylor should lead the line, featuring alongside Dion Charles, Leo Castledine and Will Alves.

Football Odds

Mateo Kovacic (Achilles), Rayan Ait Nouri (knock), Omar Marmoush (knee) and Rayan Cherki (thigh) are the injury concerns for Man City.

Erling Haaland reported back pain at Arsenal at the weekend which led to him being taken off. He is likely to be rested here, allowing an opportunity for someone else to feature in attack - perhaps Phil Foden as a false nine.

James Trafford probably thought he was going to be the number one goalkeeper when he returned from Burnley in the summer, but he's now having to play second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Englishman is set to feature between the sticks in West Yorkshire, though.

The likes of Rico Lewis, Nico Gonzalez, Nathan Ake and Oscar Bobb might be awarded starts by Guardiola.

Huddersfield vs Manchester City Predicted Line-ups

  • Huddersfield -Nichols; Sorensen, Feeney, Wallace, Roughan; Vost, Kasumu; Charles, Castledine, Alves; Taylor
  • Manchester City - Trafford; Nunes, Stones, Ake, Lewis; Bobb, Silva, Gonzalez, Reijnders, Savinho; Foden

Huddersfield vs Manchester City Odds

Huddersfield have won four of their last five competitive home games, and they are 18/1 to stun the visitors in regulation time.

Man City are the 1/7 favourites to prevail here, having beaten the Terriers in five of the previous six meetings across all competitions. The last two saw them record a clean sheet and they are priced at 4/5 (implied probability of 55.6%) to win to nil.

Both teams to score - No is marketed at 4/6 and a Man City clean sheet is available at the same price.

The draw is on offer at 15/2, with both teams experiencing stalemates in their most recent league outings.

Huddersfield vs Manchester City Stats

  • Man City have won this fixture 5-0, 3-0 and 6-1 in the past three meetings
  • Phil Foden (MCI) bagged a brace in the recent meeting in the FA Cup

Manchester City -2 handicap @ 23/20

There isn't much value in backing City for a simple victory, so I've had to get a little creative. Even with some rotation, Guardiola will still be able to field a strong XI, and one that is filled with a lot of quality up against a League 1 side.

Some players will be out to impress the City boss here as they try and force their way into his thinking for Premier League and Uefa Champions League games.

With City going the whole of the 2024/25 season without any silverware, you get the sense that they will want to fare well in the domestic cups this term, with this being their first appearance in this year's competition.

There is a big gulf in class on paper when it comes to these two sides, and I am expecting this to be reflected on the pitch on Wednesday night. City will want to let out their frustrations at the weekend following Arsenal's late equaliser against them.

I think there will be a few goals on offer to them here, so I like the look of a -2 handicap - which means they would need to win by at least three goals.

This has been a successful selection in each of their previous three contests against Huddersfield and I fancy this trend to continue here.

Phil Foden anytime goalscorer @ 6/5

The 2023/24 Premier League Player of the Season, Foden, is still in a state of inconsistency at Man City. He still isn't regarded as one of the first names on the team sheet, despite starting the previous two league games.

The England international is likely to be the leading man against Huddersfield on Wednesday if Haaland is given a well-earned rest. Guardiola could choose to deploy Foden as a false nine, and if that is the case I believe he can have a starring role in the match.

I like the look of the 6/5 price for him to find the net at anytime, particularly as he bagged a brace when he last faced Huddersfield - a 5-0 win in the FA Cup third round in January 2024.

He grabbed his first goal of the season in the Manchester derby 10 days ago and I think he will have a few goalscoring opportunities against the Terriers once again.
