Many English sides open their 24/25 campaigns this weekend and this is the hardest time of the season to put together any sort of accumulator but we'll have a go.

We've put together a 15/1 fivefold across several different divisions as we look to get the season off to a strong start for our Saturday BTTS Tips column...

Leg 1 - Cardiff City vs Sunderland

Recent history tells us that this is a poor first selection as in the past five matches between these two sides, BTTS has failed to be a winner once. If we are to go back even further, then the numbers still look pretty darn poor. They’ve played 15 times this century and on only four of those occasions, have both sets of fans had a chance to celebrate.

Yet I like what Cardiff have done over the summer. Alex Robertson is a strong addition to the squad in the centre of midfield and Wilfried Kanga scored 12 times in 36 games in Belgium last season. Callum Robertson has been banging them in throughout pre-season and they should look better going forward this campaign.

They did concede 70 times last term though and that will be a concern. For us though, that is an opportunity and despite a very quiet summer in the transfer market, the Mackems are full of young talent that have the potential to take the North East club a long way this season. I think both get on the scoresheet here.

Leg 2 - Leeds United vs Portsmouth

The home side have seen plenty of talent head off to pastures new this summer as they’ve looked to balance the books. Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Glen Kamara all played key roles last time around but have been sold. They still have one of the most talented squads around though at this level and they’ll be right up there for automatic promotion.

They face Championship newcomers Portsmouth on Saturday and they’ve been dealt a blow with top-scorer Colby Bishop out indefinitely due to undergoing heart surgery. Pompey aren’t expected to compete for promotion but backed by a large away following, they can cause problems and with their prowess from set pieces, I like them to get at least one in their opening game.

Leg 3 - Yeovil Town vs Hartlepool United

We head to 3PM now and a pick from the fifth-tier of English football as Yeovil Town play their first game back at this level after flat-out dominating the National League South last season. They won the division by 11 points and are hopeful of staying at this level.

It is Hartlepool United at home on opening day and the visitors had the best BTTS record in the National League last term, coming in at 74% (34 of 46). A promoted team at home to a side who have shown in recent times they are porous at the back but good going forward is a combination we should like.

Leg 4 - Ross County vs Dundee United

I’m not saying I’m sad but I was sitting in this very seat watching the Dundee Derby last Sunday. It was a fairly entertaining game and felt like a bit of a sign of things to come for DU fans, good going forward but ropey at the back. The penalty they gave away was one of the poorest decisions from a defender I’ve seen in a while.

It might be too early to say that this is a six-pointer in the battle to avoid the drop but both sides are expected to be down there. Therefore, this game feels like it will have a little bit more urgency than we might expect, as both sides will want to land on early blow on a potential relegation rival.

Leg 5 - Leyton Orient vs Bolton Wanderers

Saturday’s football is pretty well staggered across the day, so we head to a 17:30 kick-off for our last leg as the best side in League 1 last season found a way not to get promoted. I say this even as a Pompey fan. My lot were by far the most consistent and clinical but when they were on, the Trotters were the best side, their problem was they threw in far too many stinkers.

They still have Dion Charles, who is a fine striker at this level and I expect them to bang in the goals yet again.

Orient have brought back Sonny Perkins, the 20-year-old was part of the youth setup with the club before transferring to the West Ham academy at under-15 level. He’s back for a season-long loan from Leeds and it is hoped he’ll kick on to become the player many thought he could be. With 12 goals in 20 games at various English youth levels to his name, there is clearly a player there.

This is not an easy opening game for the visitors and I think they win but they do so even while conceding.
