Championship outfit Bristol City welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers of the Premier League to Ashton Gate on Saturday (12:00) in the third round of the FA Cup. The Robins head into this game off the back of a 1-0 home win in the league against Derby County.

Wolves suffered a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest on Monday, in what was another poor defensive display from the Old Gold. Below you will find my Bristol City vs Wolves prediction, including the latest team news and match odds.

Bristol City vs Wolves Betting Tips

  • Bristol City to win in 90 minutes @ 7/4
  • Bristol City to keep a clean sheet @ 11/4

Bristol City vs Wolves Odds

Bristol City are 7/4, which carries an implied probability of 36.4%, to win this tie inside 90 minutes. The Robins have won six of their 13 league matches at Ashton Gate this term so this selection could be tempting. Wolves are valued at 7/5 to take the victory in regulation time, but they have won just two matches away from home all season.

If you think this tie could go to extra time, the draw is on offer at 23/10 (30.3%). There have been five draws inside this stadium in 2024/25 so far.

The Robins are 1/1 to win the tie, while Wolves are priced at 8/11.

Both teams to score has been a winning selection in seven of Wolves' 10 road trips in the top flight so far, and it is available at 4/7 (63.6%) for this contest. BTTS No could also be tempting, however, seeing as the hosts have kept clean sheets in their last three outings on home soil. This is marketed at 5/4.

Under 2.5 goals has struck in eight league matches at Ashton Gate this term and this market can be backed at 1/1 for Saturday, which offers good value.

Team News

Bristol City are without the services of Sinclair Armstrong, Cameron Pring (hamstring) and Joe Williams (Achilles) for the weekend due to injury. Armstrong has been absent since the draw at Sunderland a month ago, while Pring picked up his problem in the recent 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle.

"It looks like a hamstring, but I've got no idea how serious it is or what it looks like," boss Liam Manning said after the full-time whistle at Home Park.

Kal Naismith and Mark Sykes have been in the medical bay for some time, but both are reported to be nearing a return to action. Neither were involved in the Rams clash, so Manning could have been eyeing this cup tie as the game to reintegrate them.

Yu Hirakawa, Fally Mayulu and George Tanner all made cameo appearances at the weekend and they could be considered for starts against Wolves if Manning wants to rotate his team. George Earthy, Marcus McGuane and Harry Cornick are others who will be pushing for an opportunity. There have been rumours of a January exit for Cornick, though, with League 1 side Wrexham reportedly holding an interest in the attacker.

Coming up against Premier League opposition, Manning will want control and energy in the middle of the park, so we could see Max Bird and Jason Knight keep their places in the engine room. Scott Twine and Anis Mehmeti are others who could keep their places in the team in support of the striker.

For Wolves, forward Matheus Cunha will complete his suspension, which was reduced by the Football Association to two matches, at the weekend. His absence was highlighted on Forest as Wolves squandered the chances that they did create.

Boss Vitor Pereira has an injury crisis currently, so Wolves' chances of rotating heavily for the weekend are slim. Toti Gomes (hamstring), Sasa Kalajdzic (knee), Enso Gonzalez (knee), Boubacar Traore (knee) and Yerson Mosquera (knee) are all confined to the treatment room.

The Wolves boss was given a small boost on Monday as both Pablo Sarabia and Mario Lemina were able to shake off problems of their own to feature in the second half. Lemina's future at Molineux is in doubt, though, and his attitude was called into question by supporters after the latest defeat.

The duo could be handed starts in Bristol, alongside Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Carlos Forbs, who also made cameos against Forest.

Bristol City to win in 90 minutes @ 7/4

I sense a good opportunity for Bristol City on Saturday. They are at home against one of the worst sides in the Premier League, who have shipped 45 goals in 20 league games.

Monday was another sucker punch for the Old Gold and once again their task of survival looks to be getting tougher. That was without their star player, Cunha, though, but they are going to be without him again here, so it is hard to see his team having a productive afternoon in front of goal.

They forced a couple of decent saves from Forest shot-stopper Matz Sels but mostly they were wasteful in the final third. Forward Jorgen Strand Larsen was often the only player gambling in the box, so he needs support from those around him.

Bristol City have been hot and cold in the Championship but they have found a rhythm in recent weeks as they have gone unbeaten in their last four matches, winning three of them.

Those three came at home and so I think this will serve them well against a downbeat Wolves side whose options are limited. With an extra couple of days on their opponents for rest and preparation, we could see them take advantage of Wolves and pull off an upset in the third round. I'm backing the Robins to win this tie in 90 minutes.

Bristol City to keep a clean sheet @ 11/4

For similar reasons, I also think there is value to be had in backing Bristol City to keep a clean sheet. Due to their injury crisis, I can't see Pereira rotating his side from Monday too much, which means there could be some tired legs on show from those in Old Gold.

I have already spoken about how lost they looked in the final third without Cunha so I find it hard to see that changing here. Ultimately, the credit for this selection goes to the home side themselves.

In their last three home wins, they also kept three shutouts, so I think their defence will be full of confidence and will be raring to go against a Wolves side that looked toothless last time out. I believe 11/4 is a decent price for them to record another clean sheet at Ashton Gate.
