Brentford vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction: Bees can sting Owls in goalfest

Brentford played out an exhilarating game with Ipswich Town at the weekend which saw seven goals, a red card, and a 96th-minute winner. Luckily for the Bees, that winner was scored by Bryan Mbeumo as Brentford secured a 4-3 victory that lifted them into the top half of the table.
Their next fixture comes on Tuesday night in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, as Thomas Frank’s men host Sheffield Wednesday (20:00, Sky Sports Football). The Owls were also victorious over the weekend, as they secured a 2-1 win away at Portsmouth on Friday night. Below you can find my Brentford vs Sheffield Wednesday prediction featuring team news and betting tips.
Team News
Brentford boss Frank is always one of the first moaners when it comes to fixture congestion, so we can expect him to ring the changes for this home game against lower-league opposition. After that pulsating win over Ipswich, goalscorers Mbeumo and Yoanne Wissa should be rested, with Fabio Carvalho and Kevin Schade pushing for starts.
The Bees have been leaking goals in the league so we can expect the experienced Ben Mee to come into the back four, with Icelandic goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson also likely to be given minutes in goal. Having started the previous two Carabao Cup ties, young midfielder Ryan Trevitt may also be given another chance to earn his stripes.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has made 11 changes for every Carabao Cup game so far so we can expect him to do the same here given the Owls’ busy league schedule. Defender Akin Famewo pulled his thigh in the Friday night win over Portsmouth so is expected to be out for a while and he will join Michael Ihiekwe in the treatment room.
Nathaniel Chalaboh hasn’t played since the second round game vs Grimsby but is back in training, however it looks as if Tuesday night will come too soon for the former Chelsea man. Pierce Charles will start in goal in place of James Beadle, while Ike Ugbo should be given another chance up front after dropping out of the side in recent weeks.
Djeidi Gassama should feature again with Dominic Iorfa the likely replacement for Famewo at the back. Making 11 changes has worked for Rohl so far, let’s see if he can work his magic again in the Carabao Cup.
Brentford vs Sheffield Wednesday Odds
Brentford are priced at 2/5 to win this game, giving them an implied win probability of 71%. A draw after 90 minutes is 7/2, over 2.5 goals can be backed at 8/13 and BTTS is 8/11.
Brentford to win and BTTS @ 15/8
Now I think Sheffield Wednesday are a decent outfit this season, but there’s clearly a big gap between the Premier League and the Championship. I also expect the Owls to make more changes than the home side, which should only further the gap in quality between the two teams. What I believe we will see at the Gtech Community Stadium is an open and entertaining encounter, given what Brentford have served up of late.
The 4-3 against Ipswich was bonkers, and prior to that they lost 2-1 at Manchester United and beat Wolves 5-3. In fact, both teams have now scored in the last eight Brentford games in all competitions. Even Leyton Orient found the net in the capital in the previous round of this cup. I think Wednesday have the attacking firepower to score against a shaky defence, but ultimately they are likely to be out of the competition at the end of the night.

Over 3.5 goals @ 6/4
Very much along the same lines this one. Brentford’s games have been incredibly entertaining and over 3.5 goals has been a successful selection in four of their last six fixtures. They should take the game by the scruff of the neck against Chaampionship opposition and their front line should cause problems, especially if Wissa and Mbeumo are on the pitch at some stage.
Rohl’s outfit meanwhile have struggled for goals at Hillsborough, failing to score in their last two home games, but been fairly prolific on the road of late. They scored twice at Fratton Park - with a Michael Smith wondergoal a contender for goal of the season - and prior to that scored twice away at Coventry to secure all three points. They should be able to find the net, perhaps more than once.
