Borussia Dortmund vs Freiburg Prediction: Hosts have too much firepower

The race for Champions League qualification is intensifying in the Bundesliga and Borussia Dortmund will look to take advantage of playing before Stuttgart and Leipzig this weekend.

Edin Terzic's men welcome Freiburg to Signal Iduna Park on Friday night and will be targeting a fourth win in five games at the start of 2024.

Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Gregor Kobel will all be pushing to feature for Dortmund after missing out through illness recently, but Jadon Sancho, Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi are sidelined.

Sebastian Haller, meanwhile, is at the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast.

Ritsu Doan is back for Freiburg after Japan were knocked out of the Asian Cup but Merlin Rohl is suspended and Matthias Ginter, Philipp Lienhart and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh are expected to miss out.

Injuries and illness put paid to Borussia Dortmund's perfect start to 2024 last time out, but Edin Terzic's side can return to winning ways at home to Freiburg on Friday.

After three wins on the spin against Darmstadt, Cologne and Bochum, Dortmund's winning run to start the year was curtailed with a 0-0 draw away to Heidenheim.

However, Terzic had a lengthy list of absentees to contend with and he should at least welcome back a couple of players for Friday's clash with the Black Forest club.

Dortmund oozed confidence going forwards in their first three games of 2024, scoring a total of ten goals, and they beat Freiburg by an aggregate score of 8-2 in their two meetings last season before winning September's fixture 4-2 away from home.

Recent meetings have been high-scoring and a bet on Dortmund to win and over 2.5 goals could be the way to go.

Visitors Freiburg have picked up only ten of their 28 league points on their travels and have lost each of their last two games against Werder Bremen and Stuttgart 3-1.

With a number of players having missed out recently, it remains to be seen how Dortmund will line up for this game.

Key players such as Sancho, Nmecha and Adeyemi are unavailable so the goalscoring responsibility could again fall on experienced marksman Niclas Fullkrug.

Fullkrug has bagged nine goals in the Bundesliga this term and the former Werder Bremen man has been especially lively since the turn of the year.

Fullkrug scored from the spot in the 4-0 win over Cologne last month before netting a hat-trick in the subsequent game against Bochum.

Dortmund's elected penalty taker knows where the net is and represents value at 11/10 to score at any time on Friday.
