Football Bet of the Day: Isak to step up for Swedes

A Scandinavian battle takes place between Denmark and Sweden at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Wednesday (18:00, Premier Sports), with the former using the international friendly to warm up for their Euro 2024 campaign in Germany, where the visitors will not be present.

Sweden vs Norway features in my football bet of the day for Wednesday, June 5, with a certain Premier League hotshot taking centre stage.

Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, June 5

  • Alexander Isak anytime goalscorer @ 21/10

It's fair to say that Alexander Isak is yet to fully take flight in international football, scoring just 10 times in 44 appearances for Sweden. It's not an awful record considering his country has fallen on hard times in recent years, but it's nothing to shout about either.

Isak joined Newcastle United in the summer of 2022, but he's only scored once for his nation since signing for the Magpies, the third goal in a 5-0 routing of Estonia last September. That was his first international goal since October 2021, highlighting the difficulties he has endured in a Sweden shirt.

Perhaps that explains the relatively high price of 21/10 for him to score anytime against Denmark on Wednesday.

Another reason is that their Scandinavian rivals are pretty resolute in defence, keeping a clean sheet in friendlies against the Faroe Islands (2-0) and Switzerland (0-0) in March, and conceding just 10 times in as many games during qualification for the Euros.

There are weaknesses in this current Denmark squad, but one area they certainly don't lack competition in is at the heart of defence, where the likes of Simon Kjaer (AC Milan), Andreas Christensen (Barcelona), Joachim Andersen (Crystal Palace) are jostling for position.

Protecting the central defenders, meanwhile, are midfielders including Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham Hotspur), Morten Hjulmand (Sporting Lisbon), Mathias Jensen and Christian Norgaard (both Brentford). Denmark aren't an easy team to penetrate for any nation, let alone one that failed to score in a 3-0 defeat away to Azerbaijan in November, a game where the hosts were reduced to 10 men before the hour mark.

However, Sweden have shown a few positive signs since that harrowing loss in Baku, beating Estonia 2-0 three days later before triumphing 2-1 against the same side in January, albeit the second game featuring under-strength sides. Shipping five to Portugal in March wasn't a great look, but they did score twice in that match and beat Albania 1-0 four days later.

One of their scorers against Portugal, Viktor Gyokeres - who has enjoyed a sensational season with Sporting Lisbon - won't be playing in Copenhagen on Wednesday due to a knee injury.

That should mean Isak is guaranteed a start against the Danes, with Union SG's Gustaf Nilsson the only other recognised striker named in the squad.

Isak should be given a fair amount of game time at Parken Stadium, if not the entire 90 minutes, which is ample time for him to make his mark.

The 24-year-old won't be lacking creativity around him with Dejan Kulusevski (Spurs), Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest) and Emile Forsberg (New York Red Bulls) all vying for selection.

Isak ended the 2023/24 Premier League season in superb form for Newcastle, netting in nine of his last 13 matches in the competition, scoring 12 across that period. He ended the campaign on 21 goals, behind only Cole Palmer (22) and Erling Haaland (27) in the Premier League.

At 21/10, behind six Denmark players, he's great value to score anytime on Wednesday.
