Football Bet of the Day: The Shaymen can grab a point off of super Spireites

On a day of minimal club football action across Europe due to the international break, one fixture in the National League more than grabs the eye to become our Football Bet of the Day.

After suffering heartache in last season’s play-off final - losing on penalties to Notts County - Chesterfield have taken the fifth tier of English football by storm, opening up an astonishingly big advantage of more than 20 points at the top of the table.

However, they may struggle to claim all three points on Wednesday night when they travel to The Shay to face Halifax Town, who are on a promising run of winning form as they make a late surge towards the play-off positions.

If Chesterfield were to win each of their last seven games in the National League, then Paul Cook’s side would eclipse Wrexham’s record points total of 111 from last season - with a maximum of 113 points in play for the Spireites.

The Derbyshire outfit have won 29 of their 39 league games so far, scoring a mammoth 95 goals in the process - thanks in part to the exploits of Northern Ireland striker Will Grigg who has netted 24 times this season.

However, their away form has not been too convincing in recent weeks, with the Spireites losing two of their last four away trips in the league. These have come via an enthralling 4-3 loss to third-placed Bromley and a shock 4-1 thumping at the hands of Dorking Wanderers - who are 23rd in the table and still two points adrift of safety.

This may offer some promise and confidence for Halifax, who have won six of their last seven games, which includes winning each of their last three games at The Shay - with all three of those home victories coming by the same 2-1 scoreline. However, these performances are shrouded by an element of concern in defence, with Halifax keeping just two clean sheets across their last 12 league fixtures.

Although the winning momentum is impressive, an extension to this streak could be too tall of an order for Chris Millington’s men, given that Halifax have lost three of their last four meetings with Chesterfield. This includes the reverse fixture in September, with Spireites striker Joe Quigley netting a stoppage-time winner in a 3-2 victory for the hosts.

Chesterfield were held to a 2-2 draw at Oldham in their last fixture - with that result helping the Latics stay ahead of the Shaymen in the table, albeit only on goal difference after Halifax closed the gap with a 2-0 win at Oxford City.

A repeat result for the league leaders could be in store in West Yorkshire, with Halifax’s form good enough to cancel out the visitors’ dominance, given Chesterfield’s recent struggles on the road.
