Switzerland and Scotland had very different opening matches at Euro 2024. The Swiss were convincing 3-1 winners over Hungary while Scotland were hammered 5-1 by the host nation Germany.

Now, these two sides meet on matchday two in Cologne on Wednesday night (20:00, BBC One), with the Swiss able to book their place in the last 16 with a win. Scotland on the other hand need to win or at least take a point to keep their Euros dream alive. It is from this contest that I have picked out my football bet of the day.

Football Bet of the Day - Wednesday, June 19

  • #PickYourPunt - Breel Embolo to score, Granit Xhaka 1+ shots on target and John McGinn 1+ fouls @ 7/1

Scotland vs Switzerland Odds

Hungary headed into the Euros with a strong record, just one defeat since 2022, and Switzerland beat them fairly comfortably. Murat Yakin's side gave a spirited performance to get their campaign off to a flying start and they will want to get their qualification to the knockout stage wrapped up against the Tartan Army, who were very disappointing against Germany.

Their game plan was ineffective and it allowed Germany to play through them with ease. Steve Clarke is likely to make a few personnel changes so that his team can be more competitive from the off against the Swiss.

Unfortunately, I don't think any sorts of changes will make too much of an impact because Switzerland were very impressive against Hungary and I can see them picking up another three points here.

However, my football bet of the day does nor surround the generic match result market, it focuses on particular stats using Betfred's #PickYourPunt feature. The first one is for Breel Embolo to score. The Switzerland striker has had a torrid season in which he suffered an ACL injury back in August, but given his talent, Yakin still selected him for the Euros.

The 27-year-old had to settle for a place on the bench against Hungary but he came on in the second half, made himself a nuisance and wrapped up the victory in the dying stages with a delightful chip.

Euro 2024 Odds

Embolo is not guaranteed to start, though, as he was not the only forward on the scoresheet on Saturday. Kwadwo Duah was the man to open the scoring, netting his first senior international goal on his second appearance for the Swiss. But I have a lot of confidence in Embolo that I fancy him to find the back of the net regardless of if he starts or gets a 20-minute run out.

He has the pace and skill to haunt a Scottish defence that looks to be in disarray. The next leg is for Granit Xhaka to have a shot on target. The Switzerland captain turned in a sensational player of the match performance last time out and I expect him to be integral to Swiss success once again here.

Xhaka loves to let shots rip from distance and we have seen him score some stunners over the course of his career. Against a frail Scotland back line, he might sense an opportunity to try his luck from range in Cologne, especially if he can find similar areas of space which he occupied against Hungary.

The final leg is for Scotland midfielder John McGinn to commit at least one foul. The Aston Villa man is no stranger to aggression in the challenge, and after failing to get near Germany's midfield on Friday, he will want to demonstrate a more physical challenge for the Swiss.

He is in for another tough battle after trying to cope with Toni Kroos pulling the strings for Germany, but now he faces Xhaka who does the same thing for Switzerland. He and his teammates will look to play a lot tighter to the opposition around, so I expect a lot of challenges to fly in, and I suspect that he will be penalised at least once.
