Football Bet of the Day: More away woe for Fortaleza

Fortaleza lost at Botafogo before the international break to fall behind the same side in Serie A and could struggle away at Internacional on Wednesday. The visitors have the best home record in Serie A but have won only four of their 11 away games this season.

Hosts Internacional are 16 points behind Leao do Pici but are improving under July appointment Roger Machado, triumphing 3-1 away at Juventude before the break. Fortaleza won 1-0 in Porto Alegre last season but it is tempting to oppose them at the Estadio Jose Pinheiro Borda on Wednesday (23:00), which I have done in my football bet of the day.

After finishing 10th last term, second-placed Fortaleza have been the surprise package in Serie A but the 2-0 defeat at Botafogo will have come as a real blow.

They had won three in a row before that, defeating RB Bragantino and Corinthians domestically either side of a 3-1 win over Argentinean outfit Rosario Central in the Copa Sudamericana.

Juan Pablo Vojvoda will be determined to ensure his team doesn't spurn this opportunity to leapfrog Botafogo and return to the top of the table.

However, winning at Internacional is far from easy and they are unbeaten in five home matches, losing just one of their last nine games.

Their three outings before the 3-1 triumph at Juventude all ended with a 'no' in both teams to score (a 1-0 loss at Atletico Goianiense, plus a 1-0 win and a 0-0 draw against Cruzeiro).

There has also been a clean sheet for the winner in Fortaleza's last two matches, a 1-0 victory over Corinthians and the 2-0 defeat at Botafogo, while under 2.5 goals landed in both meetings in 2023.

Machado's approach revolves around a strong defence, with the only goal his team have conceded in their last three games coming in the 92nd minute against his former club, Juventude.

Intenacional's 10 goals conceded at home is among the lowest in the league, while Fortaleza's 10 strikes on the road is level with bottom club Atletico Goianiense.

A cagey clash beckons at the Estadio Jose Pinheiro Borda and the hosts are a tempting price to take the points with an accompanying clean sheet.
