While 12 points separate the two teams in the table, Tuesday's game has the potential to be a close and entertaining battle.

Southampton are fourth and 12 points off the automatic promotion spots, but time is running out for them to gatecrash the top two, even with two games in hand.

Coventry are four points away from climbing into the top six, but they have a game in hand over sixth-place Norwich and they will view Tuesday's contest as another opportunity to get a result.

Southampton's squad will be starting to feel a little sorry for themselves after their winless run stretched to three games on Saturday.

Their 0-0 draw against Blackburn Rovers means they last won before the international break, and while they have struggled, the likes of Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Leeds United have all picked up victories.

Southampton now need all three of those teams to end the season poorly to have any hope of securing automatic promotion and there's every chance that it will take a while for Russell Martin's squad to get over their recent struggles.

On the other hand, Coventry are brimming with confidence ahead of their trip to the south coast.

The Sky Blues beat Daniel Farke's Leeds on Saturday at home, meaning they have now won seven of their last 10 in all competitions.

Mark Robins' side are also through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and his squad have given the fanbase plenty to cheer about in recent months.

Coventry know what it takes to get into the play-offs, having reached Wembley last year, and they are once again in fine form at the perfect time.

Robins' team have only lost four of their last 12 in the second tier and they have been in fine fettle on their travels as well.

Coventry have only lost two of their last 10 on the road, winning six, and they should be able to leave St Mary's with a share of the spoils.

The Sky Blues have scored in 13 consecutive matches away from home and they have plenty of momentum behind them.

When Southampton were one of the automatic promotion favourites before Christmas, Coventry held them to a 1-1 draw at home.

Tuesday's fixture could not come at a better time for the visitors, who should take full advantage of Southampton's dip in form.
