Football Bet of the Day: Thor’s hammer can strike at St Andrew’s again

Birmingham City are flying right now and that's something that has not been said for a long time. The Blues have won six league games on the bounce for the first time since 1985. The big spenders of League 1 are loving life in the third tier and will be relishing the chance to go again in midweek.

Chris Davies' side welcome a despondent Huddersfield Town outfit who have lost six of their last seven in all competitions to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on Tuesday (19:45, Sky Sports+). The Terriers were expected to be a lot closer to the Blues at the top of the table but right now they are struggling. It is from this clash that I have picked out my football bet of the day, which you will find below.

Football Bet of the Day - Tuesday, October 1

  • Bet Builder - Birmingham to win, over 2.5 Birmingham goals and Willum Willumsson anytime goalscorer @ 5/1

Birmingham vs Huddersfield Odds

Birmingham find themselves at the top of the table for the first time this season after they came from two goals down to beat Peterborough United 3-2 on Saturday and Wrexham were held to a draw with Leyton Orient.

As a jubilant Blues fan right now, even at 2-0 down, I had faith that the team could turn it around - that is what Davies and his players have added to this club which has been absent for many a year. Honestly, I'm not sure I've ever felt confident of turning a game round like that in my entire time supporting them.

For the past few weeks, Birmingham have had games against some tough opponents in League 1, and each time I have dubbed them the biggest test of the season so far. I said it against Wigan Athletic, then Wrexham, then Rotherham United and most recently Peterborough. Each time Blues have proved too much for their opponents.

Of course the financial investment over the summer plays its part, but a lot of it is down to the coaching and the application on the pitch, along with the mentality. This, along with the consistent high attendances at St Andrew's, will make it difficult for most teams to come and pinch points off them at home.

For Huddersfield and Michael Duff, this is probably the worst opponent they could have in the current form they're in, and they won't be looking forward to it. They'll have seen that even a fairly strong Posh side with a two-goal cushion wasn't enough to hand Birmingham their first league defeat of the season, and with their recent run of defensive errors, will be dreading coming up against their in-form attackers.

In record signing Jay Stansfield and Alfie May, Birmingham have arguably the strongest strike force the division has ever seen, and that's without throwing in Scotland international Lyndon Dykes into the mix.

Blues have quality all over the pitch, but the attacking positions are where they cause the most damage. A recent football bet of the day involving Birmingham I did landed at Rotherham at 4/1, and this had Stansfield to score.

Football Odds

Throughout the season, I'm sure backing either one of Stansfield or May in bets including Birmingham will have a lot of joy, but I have gone a bit more creative for this one.

My 5/1 bet builder has the hosts to win (sorry Huddersfield fans, particularly my colleague Adam), and my second selection has Willum Thor Willumsson to score anytime. The towering Icelandic midfielder got Blues' comeback up and running on Saturday as he finished off an excellent attacking move to net his second of the campaign.

Despite being one of the tallest players I've ever seen play for the club, he plays as though he were considerably shorter - he is that good with the ball at his feet. With each game he plays he is becoming more integral to Davies' team. He was one of the big signings over the summer, arriving from Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles for a reported fee of around £3.3m.

I have been very impressed with his contributions so far and he has all the talent to post a good number for both goals and assists this season. He will be feeling confident after scoring at home for the first time at the weekend, and I fancy him to do so again against a very frail Terriers back line.

The final leg of this bet is for the hosts to score over 2.5 goals. Birmingham have managed to score three goals in three of their seven fixtures in League 1 so far (Wycombe Wanderers, Wrexham and Peterborough). Offensively, they look to have found their rhythm, even if it still takes them a while in games to find it.

Huddersfield have conceded 14 goals in their last seven matches in all competitions, so they are very vulnerable right now. Blues will be rubbing their hands together because they know that they have the quality to exploit that.

I expect another big win for promotion-chasing Birmingham against another side that are expected to be one of their closest challengers.
