We’ve got a whole load of football action to look forward to on Thursday, as the Europa League kicks into top gear. However, our Football Bet of the Day for Thursday March 14 comes from League Two, where Salford City host promotion-chasing Stockport County. Neither side have been in particularly good form of late, but I believe there  is a clear and obvious selection to be made at the Peninsula Stadium.

Football Bet of the Day - Thursday March 14

  • Stockport County to beat Salford City -1 @ 23/10

Salford City really aren’t very good this season. Now it’s been revealed that Ryan Giggs has been working as their director of football since the start of the season, and clearly all is not well at the club. Now with Karl Robinson in charge, many expected last season’s play-off semi-finalists to pull away from the relegation zone, but it simply hasn’t happened.

They have picked up just one point from their last four games, and have slumped to 20th position, just eight points clear of the relegation zone. They are fortunate that only two teams go down from League Two, but worryingly they have conceded 69 goals this term, just one fewer than basement club Sutton United.

They’ve got the second-worst defence in the league, and they are coming up against the second-best attack. Stockport County looked at one point like they would run away with the division, but they’ve stumbled of late. A late Paddy Madden winner was much-needed against Newport County at the weekend, and it kept them in third-place, two points ahead of Crewe Alexandra.

It’s been a disappointing five games for Stockport, as they have lost two, drawn two, and won just one of those fixtures. They have handed top spot to Mansfield, but have now kept three clean sheets on the bounce. That late winner has got them back on track, and they absolutely pummelled Newport, with 25 shots and 14 shots on target.

They are clearly the superior team here, and I can see them securing a big win to get back level on points with Mansfield. They have two games in hand on the top two which is important to consider, and I feel they have come through the sticky patch that saw them stumble a couple of weeks ago. Dave Challinor and his side now have all the motivation they need to go again, and attempt to win the League Two title.

It starts with a big win over local rivals Salford on Thursday night.
