Bayern Munich vs Chelsea Prediction: Price Boost catches the eye

We’ve got a blockbuster clash coming our way in gameweek one of the Uefa Champions League league phase, as Bayern Munich host Chelsea at the Allianz Arena (20:00 BST, TNT Sports 2).

Although the results in the opening throws of the UCL aren’t quite as important as they once were, this is still a mouthwatering meeting of giants. Below you can find my Bayern Munich vs Chelsea predictions featuring team news and more. 

Team News

There will surely be a few cameras aimed in the direction of Nicolas Jackson on Wednesday night, after he finally got his move to Bayern Munich from Chelsea over the line before the window shut. He is currently on loan from the Londoners, but his permanent obligation for a total of £70m means he is eligible for this fixture against his parent club. 

He is unlikely to start however with Harry Kane fit and firing, while former Liverpool man Luis Diaz will keep his place on the left wing. Michael Olise should start on the right of what is a frightening front three, with Serge Gnabry playing well in the number 10 role, with Jamal Musiala out injured having broken his leg at the Club World Cup.

Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah started at centre-back last time out and should continue their partnership, while Josip Stanisic is going to have to fill in at left-back again with Alphonso Davies and Raphael Guerreiro both out injured. 

Football Odds

For Chelsea, Cole Palmer is set to be thrust back into the XI having come off the bench and scored at Brentford, with Brighton loanee Facundo Buonanotte likely to miss out. Marc Cucurella should come back in at left-back from the start, with Reece James set to replace Wesley Fofana at right-back after a strong start to the season. 

Liam Delap remains out of action with his hamstring problem so Joao Pedro will lead the line, while Alejandro Garnacho could be given his first start on the wing since joining from Manchester United. Having missed the 2-2 draw at Brentford, fellow wide man Estevao looks to be fit to return, having posted pictures of himself back in training on Instagram.

Bayern Munich are priced at 4/6 to win this game, giving them an implied win probability of 60%. Chelsea are 4/1 to find an away victory, while a draw is up at 10/3.

These two have quite the history, having met six times before, five times in the Champions League and once in the Uefa Super Cup. Of course, Chelsea’s most famous night came at this stadium in 2012, where they defeated Bayern on their own patch on penalties to win their first Champions League title - with Petr Cech and Didier Drogba stealing the headlines in Munich. 

Bayern got their own back in their last meeting in 2019/20, where Covid-19 stopped the season for 165 days, and the Germans eventually won 7-1 on aggregate. This time around, the stakes aren’t quite so high, but there’s still plenty of attacking talent on show. Luis Diaz, Kane and Olise are a front three that can tear any team in world football apart, and Bayern have started the campaign with 14 goals in three Bundesliga matches.

They smashed RB Leipzig 6-0 before scoring five past Hamburger SV at the weekend, so expect plenty of goals. Chelsea are the Club World Cup champions and boast attacking threats of their own, plus with Palmer back in the mix things should go off at both ends. This game surely guarantees goals, but I’m not comfortable trying to pick a winner.
