Austria vs Turkey

Austria meet Turkey in the round of 16 at Euro 2024 with the match taking place in Leipzig on Tuesday night (20:00, ITV1/STV). Das Team have been one of the most impressive sides in Germany and many believe they can venture far at this tournament.

Turkey have looked good themselves, giving a much better account of themselves this time around compared to Euro 2020 where they bowed out in disastrous fashion at the group stage, having been dubbed the dark horses. This is set to be an exciting encounter between two teams looking to punch above their weight. Read on for my Austria vs Turkey prediction, featuring match odds and team news.

  • Austria to win both halves @ 5/1

Team News

Austria boss Ralf Rangnick will be forced into one change as he returns to Leipzig, a place where he enjoyed several years of his managerial career. Winger Patrick Wimmer is unavailable due to suspension, so we are likely to see either Konrad Laimer or Christian Baumgartner return to the lineup having started on the bench last time out.

Baumgartner has been a joy to watch in Germany so far, so he will surely have a big role to play in this last 16 clash.

Marko Arnautovic, Das Team's all-time appearance maker, faces a tussle with Michael Gregoritsch to lead the line on Tuesday night.

Turkey have also suffered a suspension blow as captain Hakan Calhanoglu picked up a second booking in the win over Czech Republic last time out. The Inter Milan midfielder scored an excellent goal in that match so his absence will be felt by the Crescent-Stars.

Defender Samet Akaydin is also banned for the same reason but they will welcome back Abdulkerim Bardakci from suspension, so he should partner Merih Demiral in defence.

It's worth noting that should Turkey start both Kenan Yildiz and Real Madrid's Arda Guler against Austria, it will be just the second time any nation has started two teenagers in a knockout game at the Euros.

Austria to win both halves @ 5/1

There have been several teams dubbed as dark horses heading into the Euros. Many have fallen and a few remain standing. One of them is Austria, who have been one of the best teams at the tournament.

Rangnick's got them well-drilled and organised, while allowing the talented players to flaunt their abilities. Right now, you wouldn't want to face them. They pulled off a shock in topping a group that featured both France and the Netherlands, but it was thoroughly deserved.

Turkey have had their moments themselves with two wins from three in the group stage, but I think they are in for a really tough battle in Leipzig, and one I think that they will lose.

I think Austria to win both halves at 5/1 offers excellent value for this tie. Das Team have looked very good moving the ball from back to front and they have many sound operators who can make things happen. They are well-balanced and with the momentum they have built, I think this will carry them through to the quarter-finals.

They have conjured up six goals so far, scoring three times in their last two outings against Poland and the Netherlands, so there is no shortage of firepower. I think they can exploit a Turkey team that is missing its leader in Calhanoglu and they can get the job done to come out on top in both halves.

Austria to win both halves at 5/1 Over 1.5 Austria goals (in 90 mins) @ 1/1

Seeing how their last two matches have gone, I am confident in backing Austria to score at least two goals in this match in regulation time. Several players have delivered the goods for them so far, namely Baumgartner, Marcel Sabitzer, Arnautovic, Romano Schmid and Gernot Trauner.

With the intensity and precision that they play with, I expect Austria to create an abundance of chances in Leipzig and given that I am backing them to win both halves, I don't see goals being an issue for them on Tuesday.

Over 1.5 Austria goals at 1/1 Austria to win 3-1 (in 90 mins) @ 14/1

My head is telling me that Austria will win this tie 3-1 in 90 minutes. I can see them taking a 1-0 lead at half-time, doubling their lead in the second before Turkey pull one back. Then Austria will wrap up the victory in the closing stages to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Austria can put on a show if they play like they have done throughout the tournament thus far. Bar Spain and to a degree Germany, no side has impressed me more.
