Sydney vs Newcastle Jets Prediction: Sky Blues could ground Jets in first leg

Sydney FC triumphed 1-0 at Melbourne Victory in their Australian A-League Men's Elimination Final last weekend to set up a semi-final tie with Premier's Plate winners Newcastle Jets. The first leg takes place this Saturday (10:40 BST, TNT Sports 3) at Allianz Stadium.
Below are my Sydney vs Newcastle Jets predictions, supported by all the latest team news and match odds.

Team News
Sydney boss Patrick Kisnorbo appears to have a full complement available to him on Saturday as the Sky Blues haven't reported any injuries.
Joe Lolley made his return from a seven-game absence as an unused substitute in Sydney's 1-0 win at Melbourne Victory on 2 May, so it remains to be seen whether the Englishman starts the first leg or is eased back into action.
Christian Bracco, Oscar Fryer, Alexander Badolato, Noah James (all ACL) and Thomas Aquilina (hamstring) are among those still out injured for Mark Milligan's Newcastle Jets.
Eight-goal marksman Lachlan Rose missed his side's last game of the regular season, a 4-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners on April 25, but the Dundee United-bound forward should play a part on Saturday.
Sydney vs Newcastle Jets Predicted Lineups
- Sydney: Devenish-Meares; R. Grant, Popovic, Courtney-Perkins, Garuccio; Kamijo, Okon-Engstler; Toure, Arslan, Quispe; Stamatelopoulos
- Newcastle Jets: Delianov; Bertolissio, Shaughnessy, Natta, Wilmering; Burgess; Adams, Dobson, Bayliss, Taylor; Gibson
Sydney, who beat Newcastle Jets 4-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium in November, are 5/4 to secure a first-leg lead, implying a 44.4% probability of success. Meanwhile, the visitors, who have won the last two head-to-heads, are 13/8, or a 38.1% chance, to beat the Sky Blues again, while a first stalemate between the two teams since January 2025 can be backed at 11/4.
Sydney vs Newcastle Jets Stats
- Four of SYD's five games under Kisnorbo have gone under 2.5 goals
- SYD are top of the ALM's under 2.5 goals table, with 59% of their matches, including last week's Elimination Final, going that way
- Former SYD midfielder Burgess (NEW) was booked in his side's 2-1 win at Allianz Stadium in March
Total Goals - Under 2.5 @ 13/8
The Jets stormed to this season's Premier's Plate, scoring 55 goals in 26 games - nine more than the second-most prolific team, Adelaide United (46).
Milligan's men thumped Central Coast Mariners 4-0 at home in their last regular-season match, while their last away game also saw four goals as they drew 2-2 with Melbourne Victory.
Newcastle beat Sydney 2-1 at Allianz Stadium in March, and six of the last seven head-to-heads have seen at least three goals scored.
However, Kisnorbo is an absolute master at strangling games.
Since replacing Ufuk Talay in the Sydney dugout, the former Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory boss has overseen four games that have finished with two or fewer goals. Two of those ended in a 0-0 draw, while the latest was that 1-0 win at Victory in last weekend's Elimination Final.
The only Sydney match Kisnorbo's managed that has gone over 2.5 goals is a 2-2 draw with Auckland FC on the final day of the regular season, and that was one where both sides were going all out for three points.
I don't see either team going all guns blazing on Saturday with Kisnorbo's conservative approach married with the Jets' knowledge that the second leg can be won on home soil next weekend.
While Newcastle aren't famed for their risk-adverse tactics, six of their last 20 games have gone under 2.5 goals, while Sydney rank top for this statistic across the whole season, with 59% of their 27 matches, including the Elimination Final win at Victory, finishing with two or fewer strikes.

Player to Receive a Card - Max Burgess (NEW) @ 13/5
After turbulent last season at Sydney, making just four appearances for the Sky Blues as he was frozen out by then-boss Talay, Max Burgess is a man reborn at the Jets.
The 31-year-old missed just two matches as his side shocked the league to claim a first-ever Premier's Plate, and he was a key part of their success, winning their Men's Player of the Year award.
Burgess will be keen to get one over his former club in this semi-final tie, and he played a major role in the Jets' 2-1 win at Allianz Stadium in March, assisting the first goal of the game for Kota Mizunuma before receiving the seventh and final yellow card of the game in second-half injury time.
The Australian committed three fouls in that victory, and he's likely to be busy in the middle of the park again on Saturday up against Paul Okon-Engstler, who is averaging 1.5 fouls won per game in this season's ALM.
