Auckland vs Sydney Prediction: Sky Blues booking for Belgian bruiser

Reigning Premier's Plate champions Auckland FC lost their leaders tag last weekend as, despite holding a 1-0 lead at Perth Glory, they ended up losing 2-1. On Saturday (04:00 GMT, TNT Sports 1), the Black Knights host Sydney FC, who are above the New Zealanders on goal difference thanks to a 4-1 Sydney derby success last time out, at Go Media Stadium.
Below are my Auckland vs Sydney predictions, alongside all the latest team news and match odds, ahead of Saturday's third-versus-second clash in the Australian A-League Men's.

Team News
Back-up Auckland goalkeeper Oli Sail, who made his Black Knights debut in last Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Perth Glory, was taken off in the 69th minute at HBF Park due to injury, and the 30-year-old has been ruled out of this weekend's game, which should see Michael Woud restored to Steve Corica's starting lineup.
Gus Hoefsloot (wrist), Abel Walatee (groin) and Al Hassan Toure (calf) are out injured for Sydney, but head coach Ufuk Talay is boosted by the return of Rhys Youlley, who had been serving a two-game suspension for a red card received in his side's 2-0 home defeat to Wellington Phoenix on January 18.
Auckland vs Central Coast Mariners Predicted Lineups
- Auckland: Woud; Sakai, Hall, Girdwood-Reich, De Vries; Verstraete, Gallegos; Brook, May, Randall; Cosgrove
- Sydney: Devenish-Meares; R. Grant, Tisserand, A. Grant, Garuccio; Hollman, Okon-Engstler; Akon, Quintal, Quispe; Campuzano
Auckland won last season's corresponding fixture 1-0 in October 2024, and Corica's charges are 8/11 to triumph again on home soil this weekend, implying a 57.9% probability of success, while Sydney are 3/1, or a 25% chance, to record their fifth away victory of the campaign, with the draw offered at 5/2.
Auckland to Win, Sam Cosgrove 1+ Shots on Target, Guillermo May 1+ Shots on Target & Sydney to Receive 2+ Cards has been boosted to 7/2 (was 3/1).
Auckland vs Sydney Stats
- Verstraete (AKL) is averaging 1.7 fouls p/g in 25/26 ALM
- Two of the three H2Hs have ended level after regulation time
- AKL have only won one of their six matches this calendar year (D2, L3)
Player to Receive a Card - Louis Verstraete (AKL) @ 11/4
Auckland midfielder Louis Verstraete, averaging 1.7 fouls per game in this season's ALM, has been booked three times in 15 appearances, half the amount he picked up in 25 matches in 2024/25, when he also received a red card.
The 26-year-old hasn't been booked in any of his six appearances this calendar year, last going into the book in the Black Knights' 2-0 win at Western Sydney Wanderers on December 19, but he's made 14 fouls in 2026, including 3+ in his first three games, so he may consider himself fortunate not to have received a card.
On Saturday, Verstraete will line up opposite Sydney's Paul Okon-Engstler, who is averaging 1.5 fouls won per game, while fellow midfielders Tiago Qunital and Corey Hollman both drew yellow cards on the Sky Blues' last away trip, a 4-0 defeat to Melbourne Victory on January 26.
In my opinion, the Belgian is ripe for his first booking against Sydney, and 11/4 is an attractive enough price to back him at.

Match Result - Draw @ 5/2
It's difficult to predict what we'll get from either side on Saturday, such have been their respective inconsistencies of late.
Auckland have only won one of their six games this calendar year (D2, L3), failing to claim victory in any of their last three (D1, L2), while Sydney haven't secured back-to-back successes since mid-December, winning two, drawing one, and losing three of their last six matches.
That stalemate at Melbourne City on January 3 was the Sky Blues' first of the season, while Auckland's 2-2 with Central Coast Mariners on January 24 was their fourth draw of the 2025/26 campaign, and their second on home soil.
Both head-to-heads last season were tight, with Auckland only winning 1-0 at Go Media Stadium thanks to a strike from Nando Pijnaker in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, while the sides played out a four-goal draw at Allianz Stadium last April.
Then, last August, in the Australia Cup, the Sky Blues and Black Knights drew 1-1 in Sydney, with Joe Lolley and Lachlan Brook scoring in the 85th and 87th minutes, respectively, before the visitors won 3-1 on penalties.
