Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Prediction: Visitors fancied in crucial clash

After contrasting fortunes in Europe in midweek, Atlético Madrid and Barcelona meet in perhaps the most significant game of the season so far in La Liga.
As far as Atleti’s title chances go, this could be make or break. Win it, and they’d leapfrog Barça heading into the international break, and they’d be in a strong position heading into the final 10 matches when they don’t have to face a single top-five opponent.
Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona Tips - Sunday, March 16
An away win on Sunday evening however, would leave Diego Simeone’s side four points off the pace and needing a number of favours from other clubs, not least given they have also played a game more than the Catalans.
Barça may sense that this is a really good opportunity to deal a hammer blow to the title hopes of one of their two rivals. They should be much the fresher side having not played in La Liga last weekend, and they cruised through to the Champions League quarter-finals with three first-half goals sealing a 4-1 aggregate win over Benfica on Tuesday.
By contrast, Atlético have had a much more gruelling week, and they’ve got absolutely nothing to show for their efforts.
Simeone named a stronger than expected line-up at Getafe last Sunday, but Ángel Correa’s 88th minute red card sparked a late collapse as their neighbours came back to win 2-1 thanks to two goals from Mauro Arambarri.
The response was immediate in midweek, as Conor Gallagher lifted the roof off the Estadio Metropolitano with a first minute goal in their Champions League derby against Real Madrid. 119 goalless minutes followed as the game went to penalties, and to the surprise of nobody who has followed this rivalry over the past decade, Los Blancos found a way through, with the supposed double-kick penalty from Julián Alvarez a moment of huge controversy.
The Atleti boss acted as cheerleader and did his best to rally his players and the crowd in the immediate aftermath, but there was little hiding the despair on the faces of all those of a red-and-white persuasion on the pitch or in the stands.
Simeone and his staff face a huge challenge in trying to lift these players mentally and physically, in order to go again for another massive game this weekend. From the outside, it’s hard to avoid the sensation that it might be starting to slip away from Atlético, with dropped points in five of their last eight league games.
Barcelona, by contrast, have been close to flawless since the turn of the year. They remain unbeaten in 2025, having gone 17 without defeat in all competitions since they lost the reverse fixture against Atleti in La Liga back in December.
A six-game winning streak in the league has really turned up the pressure on the Madrid clubs, although they’ve not had the opportunity to add to their points tally since a comfortable 4-0 home win over Real Sociedad a fortnight ago.
The big difference between these two sides is in terms of Barça’s extra firepower, with their 71-goal return the best in La Liga, and significantly better than Atleti’s total of 44.
With 12 games still to play, Hansi Flick’s side have already surpassed the goal total of Xavi’s 2022/23 title-winning squad. 55% of their goals have come from the front three of Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, but they have had 15 different scorers in La Liga this term.
Team News:
The hosts are sweating over the fitness of Rodrigo De Paul heading into this game. If he doesn’t recover in time, the fit-again Koke is an option to partner Pablo Barrios in midfield.
The suspended Correa is the home team’s only definite absentee, but Simeone is expected to freshen things up from midweek, with Javi Galán likely to return at left-back, while Robin Le Normand and Samuel Lino are also pushing for recalls.
As for the visitors, there may be just one change from Tuesday night, with Pau Cubarsí set to return in defence following his Champions League suspension. Gavi is also in contention to start in midfield, but Dani Olmo is in good form and may keep his place.
Barcelona have no fresh injury problems, but Marc-André ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen and Marc Bernal are still sidelined.
Barcelona are the 5/4 favourites to make it seven wins on the spin in La Liga. You can back Atlético Madrid to bounce back from their European despair and win this game at 2/1. Meanwhile, the Draw is available at 13/5.
If you fancy the visitors to take firm control of the title race with a strong performance in this match, you can also back Barcelona and Over 2.5 goals at 2/1. Meanwhile, the free-scoring visitors are priced at 11/4 to score over 2.5 goals in the game, and at 7/4 to score in both halves.
Alternatively, you can back Over 1.5 home team goals at 6/5. Atleti are priced at 10/11 to win either half, while Atlético Madrid to win, Julián Alvarez 2+ shots on target and Both teams to score has been boosted to 9/1.
Pichichi front-runner Lewandowski leads the way in the goalscorer markets. You can back the Polish international to score first at 9/2 and anytime at 13/10. Raphinha is also in fine form, with two more goals on Tuesday, and he’s available at 15/8 to score anytime.
From a home perspective, you can back Alvarez to get on the scoresheet at 13/8, while Antoine Griezmann is available at 15/8 to score anytime. Alexander Sørloth also looks good at 11/2 to score last in this game, with the Atleti super sub having already netted two key stoppage-time goals against Barça so far this season.
Barcelona to win @ 5/4
While it’s true that Atleti won the reverse fixture in La Liga and drew 4-4 in the Catalan capital in the Copa del Rey a few weeks back, those results do not tell the full story of those games. Barça created much the better opportunities in the league meeting, and dominated the cup encounter, apart from the very beginning and very end of that match.
They’ve been in the better form of the two sides, and it feels like they’re at a major advantage here given they’ve only played one match in the previous 10 days, and that was a relative stroll in the end for Flick’s side.
Atleti by contrast have chalked up over 200 minutes of football over the past week, and it’s hard to see them being at their best level here, so I’m backing Barcelona to win at 5/4.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Atlético Madrid over 29.5 booking points & Atlético Madrid over 3.5 corners @ 5/4
The home team’s best chance on Sunday may be to disrupt and slow this game down at times, as they’re unlikely to have enough gas in the tank for another high-intensity encounter.
That could lead to the home booking count rising, but there should still be periods when Atlético Madrid are on top and able to ask questions of the visiting defence.
Surprisingly, Barcelona have actually conceded more corners away from home in La Liga this season than they’ve won, with 5.36 per game given up on average on the road.
Given those factors, I’m using the Bet Builder to back Atlético Madrid over 29.5 booking points and Atlético Madrid over 3.5 corners at 5/4.
