Atletico Mineiro vs Sao Paulo Prediction: Hulk too strong for Sabino

Despite finishing eighth last year, 28 points behind champions Flamengo, it's Sao Paulo who are setting the pace in this 2026 Brazilian Serie A season, claiming 16 points from their first six games (W5, D1). On Wednesday (23:00 GMT), the Tricolour Paulista take on Atletico Mineiro, who have only picked up five points from 18 on offer, at the MRV Arena in Belo Horizonte.
Below are my Atletico Mineiro vs Sao Paulo predictions, supported by all the latest team news and match odds.

Hulk began Atletico's 2-0 defeat to Vitoria last Saturday on the bench, coming on for Tomas Perez in the 58th minute, but I expect the former FC Porto star to return to Eduardo Dominguez's starting XI for Wednesday's game against Sao Paulo.
The 39-year-old is in the latter stages of his career, with his goalscoring numbers diminishing, yet he remains a big threat to the opposition, who regularly resort to fouling him.
Hulk averaged two fouls won per game in last year's Serie A, and after six appearances this season, two of which have come from the bench, he's averaging three fouls won per game.
The powerful forward was upended six times in his side's first match of the new campaign, a 2-2 draw with Palmeiras on January 28, although none of those offences resulted in a booking.
That wasn't the case in Atletico's 1-0 victory over Red Bull Bragantino on February 4, when home midfielder Gabriel Girotto was awarded a yellow for an unfair challenge on Hulk.
A week later, Remo's left-sided centre-back, Kayky Almeida, was cautioned for fouling him in a 2-2 draw, and in Hulk's most recent league start, a 1-0 win against Internacional last Wednesday, the Atletico captain was taken down six times, with one of those fouls seeing a yellow handed out to Vitor Gabriel, who was playing on the left-hand side of a back three.
So, I think the smart move this Wednesday could be to back whoever is playing on the left side of Sao Paulo's defence to collect a card, as this is an area of the pitch where the left-footed Hulk does most of his work.
Sabino has been Sao Paulo's left-sided centre-back in a four-man defence for their last two games, and it's been successful tactic for Roger Machado's charges, who kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory over Chapecoense last Thursday before beating Red Bull Bragantino 2-1 away three days later, in which Sabino scored their equaliser.
The 29-year-old hasn't been booked in any of his five league appearances this season, but he's averaging 1.8 fouls per game, committing three in both Serie A outings this month.
Sabino isn't a serial card collector, picking up just three yellows in each of the last two league seasons, but he was booked in his side's 2-0 Paulista victory over Santos on January 31, and his foul numbers are so high, so combined with facing a physical forward like Hulk who draws so many fouls, it's a recipe for a caution on Wednesday, in my opinion.

Bet Builder - Atletico Mineiro Over 5.5 Corners & Junior Alonso (ATM) 1+ Shots @ 3/1
Atletico are averaging 6.33 corners taken per game in this season's Serie A, although their home average is only 4.33. However, that can partially be explained by taking a second-minute lead against Internacional last week, which they held onto in a game where they took just two corners.
Against Remo and Palmeiras, though, they took five and six corners, respectively.
Paraguayan defender Junior Alonso took his first shot of the season in that stalemate with Remo before doubling his tally in his fourth appearance, last weekend's defeat to Vitoria, taking his campaign average to 0.5 per game.
The 33-year-old averaged 0.5 shots per game in last season's Serie A, missing the target with a header in his only outing against Sao Paulo, a goalless draw at home last April.
Sao Paulo, meanwhile, are averaging 5.17 corners conceded per game, increasing slightly to 5.33 away from home, conceding seven, three and six, respectively, at Santos, Coritiba and Red Bull Bragantino.
