It’s another jam-packed weekend of football action from across the United Kingdom, with some mouth-watering fixtures on the programme. Celtic have an opportunity to return to the top of the Scottish Premiership, while there are also games from the English Premier League and the FA Cup. There’s more than enough to keep bettors busy at Betfred.

Betfred’s experienced football writer, Frank Monkhouse, casts his eye over the best the weekend has to offer, picking out three players worth backing in his Saturday anytime goalscorer tips column, to create a treble at attractive odds of over 20/1…

Anytime Goalscorer Tips

  • Mario Lemina to score anytime in Wolves vs Coventry @ 11/4
  • Matt O’Riley to score anytime in Celtic vs St Johnstone @ 13/10
  • Julian Alvarez to score anytime in Man City vs Newcastle @ 6/4
  • Overall Odds - 20.56/1

Mario Lemina to score anytime

This weekend, armchair fans have a treat in store: both of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-finals will be broadcast live on terrestrial television. The curtain goes up at Molineux Stadium from 12:15pm, where Premier League Wolves host Championship side Coventry City, with a place in the last four at stake.

Wolves are the home team, and pre-match betting favourites at Betfred. They’re fancied to win here and turn on the style, keeping alive their hopes of landing a rare piece of silverware. Wolves enter on the back of a decent run, winning three of their last four in the Premier League.

Gabon midfielder Mario Lemina has already bagged five goals this season, making him Wolves’ third-highest scorer, behind Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan. Lemina’s most recent goal came in the previous round of this competition, when his strike inside two minutes was enough to send his team through at the expense of Brighton.

Matt O’Riley to score anytime

Moving to the Scottish Premiership for Celtic’s home tie against St Johnstone from 3:00pm on Saturday and, the hosts would return to the top of the table with a win. Last season’s treble winners are currently in second place on 68 points, two behind Rangers, who visit Dundee on Sunday.

The home team is under a lot of pressure following their painful defeat to Hearts in their last league game, and it's time for their high-earning and experienced players to stand up and be counted.

Hoops midfielder Matt O’Riley enters as his team’s highest scorer with 11 goals in 35 games, but the 23-year-old Englishman hasn’t found the net in three games. His last goal came in a jaw-dropping 7-1 home win for Celtic over Dundee, with O’Riley getting number three that day.

That goal against the Dens Park team was O’Riley’s first since scoring in a 3-0 away win over St Mirren in his team’s first game of 2024, so he hasn’t been anywhere near as consistent as fans would’ve hoped this year. He did bag a crucial goal when these teams last met, firing Celtic into the lead at McDiarmid Park on 79 minutes. The stage is set for O’Riley to capture the headlines again.

Julian Alvarez to score anytime

We wrap up Saturday’s anytime scorer treble and hope to still be in the running for a win when Manchester City hosts Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium. You can follow the game live on BBC One from 5:30pm.

Two huge names from the Premier League will face off for a place in the semi-finals. Pep Guardiola will likely rest a few of his EPL regulars for this cup tie, but the experienced manager knows it's a game and competition fans want to win. He’ll be pushing hard to defend the prize he captured at the national stadium last spring.

Who will score the goals needed to send Man City through to the next round? We’re pinning our hopes on Argentine forward Julian Alvarez. The 24-year-old is his employer’s third-highest scorer with 16 goals, trailing Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

Alvarez scored seven goals in seven games earlier this year and was on the scoresheet when his team beat Copenhagen 3-1 here in the Champions League recently and in a 1-0 home win for City over Newcastle in the league.
