Bragging rights are at stake at the Mendizorrotza on Friday night with Alaves hosting Athletic Bilbao in this Basque derby.

It is over 20 years since Bilbao last tasted success at the Mendizorrotza, but Friday’s meeting looks to be one of the best chances they have had for some time to end their long wait for another victory in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Alaves vs Athletic Bilbao Prediction

  • Athletic Bilbao to win @ 5/4
  • #PickYourPunt – Both teams to score (No) & Over 7.5 total corners @ 13/10

Team news

Alaves remain without the services of Giuliano Simeone, who is recovering from the leg break suffered in pre-season.

Neco Williams is set for a couple of weeks on the sidelines for Bilbao after sustaining an injury while on international duty with Spain. Peru Nolaskoain is also injured.

Athletic Bilbao to win @ 5/4

Bilbao have become a middling team in La Liga over the past few years and they have failed to finish higher than eighth since grabbing seventh place in the 2016/17 campaign.

The Lions have become more of a cup team in recent seasons and their last four performances in the Copa del Rey have produced two runner-up medals and two semi-final appearances.

However, Ernesto Valverde’s side have made a positive start to the league this season and find themselves fourth in the table on 10 points, winning three and drawing one of their five matches.

They have kept clean sheets in their two away assignments, beating Osasuna 2-0 and drawing 0-0 at Mallorca, and Bilbao will be confident of grabbing their first win over Alaves at the Mendizorrotza since May 2003.

Alaves have struggled for consistency, mixing three defeats with two victories, although those wins have come on home soil.

Despite impressing in their own backyard, they may not have enough to stop an in-form Bilbao and the 5/4 on the visitors to win is hard to ignore.

#PickYourPunt – Both teams to score (No) & Over 7.5 total corners @ 13/10

Another area to look at for this fixture is Betfred’s #PickYourPunt market and, on offer at 13/10, both teams to score (no) and over 7.5 total corners is a tempting price.

Alaves have failed to score in three of their five matches this season, while Bilbao have kept back-to-back clean sheets and are yet to concede on the road in two attempts.

Bilbao look like a strong unit at the back of late and they should have enough to keep out an Alaves side that mustered just one shot on target in defeat to Vallecano last time out.

Alaves had a paltry expected goals (xG) of 0.55 in that loss and it is hard to make a case for them to find the back of the net.

The second part of this #PickYourPunt is for there to be over 7.5 total corners.

So far this season, Bilbao are averaging nine corners per match – five for and four against – while Alaves are averaging 6.80.

Adding in over 7.5 corners for Friday’s encounter doesn’t seem outlandish and it bumps up the price nicely for our second and final betting suggestion.
