Bristol Rovers to beat Plymouth Argyle @ 2/1

Plymouth Argyle are arguably the worst team in English football right now and Tom Cleverley isn’t helping himself. Somehow still in charge of the Pilgrims, his side sit rock bottom of League 1 having only been relegated from the Championship last term. It’s been appalling stuff from the Devon club and another relegation is a serious concern, with issues ongoing at board level.

Cleverley even suggested after a damaging defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday that his team could “take confidence” from the fact they were top of the league in the EFL Trophy. As you can imagine, that didn’t go down well either. I think this is a big price for Rovers to win, given they  have picked up five points so far in this competition and will target top spot.

Chesterfield to beat Liverpool U21 @ 1/2

As always when I look at the EFL Trophy, I want to back against the Premier League U21 teams. As you can see from the rest of my picks, it’s a strategy I’ve gone for again on Tuesday night and this pick sees promotion-chasing Chesterfield host Liverpool U21.

The academy team just aren’t good enough to compete against senior League 1 and League 2 outfits. They don’t have the physicality to compete with the big boys and that’s been shown again this season as Liverpool U21 have lost both games 2-0, to Burton Albion and Crewe Alexandra. Chesterfield are a step up on both of those and should find an easy win.

Salford City to beat Wolves U21 @ 8/13

Salford have won two from two in this competition and are also going well in League 2 as they sit third, while Wolves U21 have been reasonably competitive, winning one of their two games in this group. It means they have a chance of qualifying, despite losing their opening game 5-3 to Stockport County.

I will back the fourth-tier side to win this game, given the quality we’ve seen from them so far.

Colchester United to beat Fulham U21 @ 8/15

Last one from this competition, and Fulham U21 have struggled. They are already out having lost two from two while Colchester United have already qualified with six points on the board. Colchester are 16th under Danny Cowley in League 2 but should have too much for Fulham U21, who lost 3-1 to Wycombe and 4-1 to Gillingham.

Forest Green Rovers to beat Tamworth @ 8/15

Down to the National League now and Robbie Savage deserves a lot of credit for the work he has done at Forest Green. They pushed Luton all the way in the FA Cup and sit fifth in the National League as they target a return to the EFL.

On Tuesday they host Tamworth, a side that are 11th and have lost their last two games, so I’m happy to back another home win here.
