AC Milan vs Udinese Prediction: Good value on San Siro parity

AC Milan return from the international break with a game against one of their bogey sides, in the form of Udinese. These two meet at San Siro at 17:00 on Saturday as Milan look to recover from back-to-back defeats, with a damaging 2-1 loss against Fiorentina their last result.

Paulo Fonseca is seemingly struggling to get his side to produce on a consistent basis, with the high of a victory in the Derby della Madonnina tempered by those recent defeats. With both Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham missing penalties against David de Gea last time out, the new manager needs to stamp his authority on this group and fast. Team News

Hernandez is suspended for this one after his injury-time red card in Florence, which leaves Fonseca with an issue to solve at left-back. Filippo Terracciano, Alex Jimenez, or Strahinja Pavlovic are all vying for that place, with the manager unlikely to switch from his 4-2-3-1 system. Up front, Tammy Abraham may start on the bench, with Noah Okafor potentially starting in his place, with Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao providing the width. 

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been working independently but joined in with team training on Thursday after his hamstring injury, while Samuel Chukwueze is also back fit and available after suffering from fatigue on international duty. Alvaro Morata and Fikayo Tomori may possibly lose their starting spots if the manager wants to make a big statement in this one. 

For Udinese, they are unlikely to want to change too much from the 1-0 success that saw them go up to fifth in the table before the break. Jurgen Ekkelenkamp is expected to continue in midfield in their 3-5-2 system, alongside Jesper Karlstrom and Oier Zarraga. Former Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Milan are priced at 4/11 to win this one, with Udinese available at 15/2 for the win. A draw can be backed at 4/1, over 2.5 goals is 4/7 and BTTS is 5/6. Abraham and Morata are joint-favourites to score first at 9/2.

I think this game is going to be a lot closer than the odds suggest, but more on that shortly. My first selection is for both teams to find the net at San Siro on a balmy Saturday afternoon. Milan have a ridiculous amount of attacking talent, most of which I’ve mentioned already, but if they click they could be one of the best attacking teams in Europe. 

Leao is one of the best wingers in the world, Pulisic has a point to prove, while Abraham, Morata and now Okafor are all trying to establish themselves as the number one striker. That competition for places is sure to lead to goals, and Milan have scored in every single league match so far. 

There should be no concerns about the home side finding the net, but I also believe Udinese can score in this one. They’ve scored in eight of their nine matches in all competitions this term, including bagging two against Inter last time out. This should be a decent game for the neutral.

I know that Milan are big favourites here, but having listened to a couple of podcasts on them this season, I don’t think their fans are all that convinced by Fonseca or the football they’ve seen so far. The main issue seems to be consistency. They were terrific in the win over Inter but flopped against Bayer Leverkusen and Fiorentina.

They missed two penalties last time out as Fonseca tried to convey to his players that Pulisic was the designated taker. The American didn’t take either of them as first Hernandez, then Abraham saw their spot-kicks saved by De Gea. Milan have what it takes to be a force this season, but without their star left-back and with Tomori also out of form, they may not be as dominant as the odds suggest. I think we are getting excellent value on an in-form Udinese side to emerge with a point.
