Bangladesh need to sharpen up

After beating Sri Lanka in a bilateral series earlier in the year and then swatting Hong Kong aside in their opener, Bangladesh would have been confident ahead of their group stage clash, but it ended up being a one-sided affair, with SL making light work of a 140-ish chase to win by six wickets.

But they recovered well and pulled off a superb eight-run win over Afghanistan and then  qualified for the Super Fours when Rashid Khan's men failed to beat Sri Lanka on Thursday.

Skipper Litton Das has been their most consistent batter, with 96 runs at a strike rate of 126, and remains the anchor to their chances. With the ball, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed have been a threat with the new ball, picking up four wickets apiece.

One area where much improvement is needed is fielding. Dropped catches have already cost Bangladesh momentum at key points in this tournament, and against a side with as much top-order power as Sri Lanka, that cannot continue.

Serene progress for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were measured and ruthless in that win over Bangladesh, led by a 95-run partnership between Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara and they were very impressive when brushing aside Afghanistan with Kusal Mendis carrying his bat for 74.

Nissanka has been a standout with the bat, scoring 124 runs at strike rate of 149, while with the ball, experienced spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been highly frugal in the middle overs, with an economy rate of 5.23, and seamers Dushmantha Chameera and Nuwan Theshara have been effective, with nine wickets between them.

Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage, who featured for the first time against Afghanistan, has left the squad following the death of his father.

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Predicted Lineups:

  • Sri Lanka: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kamil Mishara, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka (c), Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana,  Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara
  • Bangladesh: Tanzid Hasan, Saif Hassan, Litton Das (c, wk), Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Nurul Hasan, Jaker Ali, Rishad Hossain, Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman

Key Odds

When these two faced up in the Group stages, Sri Lanka were 4/7 with Bangladesh rated as 11/8 chances, but the traders have been impressed with Charith Asalanka's men after going 3/3, and they've been cut all the way into 4/11 with Bangladesh out at 2/1.

Nissanka fell cheaply against Afghanistan but he's still the top scoring batsman of the tournament and is the 13/5 favourite to top score for SL, with Kusal Mendis a 3/1 chance after that unbeaten 74 last time out. The impressive Das tops the market for Bangladesh at 10/3, with Tanzid Hasan at 7/2 and Towhid Hridoy at 4/1.

On the bowling front, Theshara is 14/5 favourite for Sri Lanka after picking up four wickets against Afghanistan, with Hasaranga rated a 10/3 chance. For Bangladesh, left-arm pacer Rahman tops the market at 11/4, with Taskin at 3/1.

Best Bets:

Bangladesh arrive as underdogs, but they will have backers at 2/1. They know how to beat Sri Lanka and Dubai has been a tough ground to score on, likely reducing the talent gap between the sides. But this isn't a market we'd want to play before the toss given how good Sri Lanka are at chasing.

We have, however, found an angle in the top batter market. Saif Hassan returned to the Bangladesh side for the Afghanistan match after injury, scoring a tidy 30, and he's 9/2 to top score here - a big price for an opening batsman.

We'll also back Kusal Mendis to build on his fine performance against Afghanistan and beat his runs line of 20.5. The wicket-keeper batsman likes playing against Bangladesh, scoring four centuries across formats in matches between the two sides.
