1st T20I Recap

Australia's seasoned T20 stars were too good for England's mix of debutants, semi-regulars and old heads on the day, with the Aussie win securing us a 4/5 win of our own.

It was a win built on Travis Head's 59 off 23 balls, an innings of both brutality and skill, in the process also handing us an Aussie Top bat payout at 11/4, though the impressive Matt Short threatened to ruin our fun with a super 41 off 26 of his own; but he didn't.

And playing a part in defending their total was Sean Abbott and his 3/28, which you guessed it, was our third bet of the match, providing us with a 4/1 winner on the Top Aussie bat market.

So a clean sweep of 3/3, returning a profit of 8.55 points. All of which means across our last four previews, starting with the 1st Test against Sri Lanka, that's 19.72 points in profit.

As those financial adverts always say, 'past performance isn't always an indication of future performance' but let's see what we can do.

England

Liam Livingstone had an excellent match, top scoring with the bat for England and also being their top wicket-taker with the ball. Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood also bowled well but Reece Topley didn't, only being given over after it went for 15, though Sam Curran wasn't much better, also extremely expensive, although he did take a wicket.

Topley may be let out with one of John Turner or Josh Hull being given a go while Dan Mousley might also get his chance, either coming in for Sam Curran or Jacob Bethell.

Possible Lineup:  Jacks, Salt, Cox, Bethell/Mousley, Livingstone, Curran, Overton, Archer, Rashid, Mahmood, Topley/Hull/Turner.

Australia

There were plenty of good contributions all over the shop in the Aussie camp. Just look at the fact that all six of their bowlers took at least one wicket. Even Tim David, out for a golden duck, made up for it somewhat with a superb catch to get rid of Jordan Cox.

Short was something of a surprise inclusion ahead of Jake Fraser-McGurk but after that impressive knock, he'll be in possession of that opener's slot for the time being.

Xavier Bartlett limped off in the middle of an over so Riley Meredith, Aaron Hardie and Ben Dwarshius, the latter brought in as cover, will be fighting it out for his spot.

Possible Lineup: Head, Short, Marsh, Inglis, Green, Stoinis, David, Abbott, Hardie/Meredith, Zampa, Hazlewood.

Pitch and conditions

England will be glad the next match is at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, where they have a near-perfect 8/9 record with wins over: Pakistan (three times), South Africa and Sri Lanka (twice), Australia (in 2015) and India. Only South Africa were able to beat them, in 2022.

First innings scores have been all over the place in T20Is here with some low-ones, middle-of-the-range ones and then South Africa posting 207 in that win, which they defended with ease. So, hard to say what's par here.

There's about a 20% chance of rain for the first couple of hours but we'll definitely get a game in.

England vs Australia 2nd T20 Odds

Australia have been chopped from 4/5 ahead of the first game to 8/13 here and that's understandable. It was a comfortable 28-run win in the end. But they won't always get off to such a good start with the bat or take all their catches like they did in Southampton. So I'm not that tempted to go in again at a considerably shorter price.

England at 13/10 have in their favour that excellent record here but that's not enough to convince me they're a bet either, with worries that their bowling attack, Rashid aside, can keep the runs down.

Australia Top Batsman

Time to switch allegiances to that man Matt Short. This is a serious player who  topped the BBL run-scorer charts last year playing for a somewhat mediocre Adelaide Strikers side and was Player of The Series in the last two editions.

He's also had his moments in the IPL and The Hundred so he's not one of those Chris Lynn-like batsmen who can really turn it on when batting at home and struggles elsewhere.

He played really well the other day and was a bit unlucky to fall to a great catch. Crucially, he's an opener so will have every chance, and even more crucially, he's 4/1 to Head's 5/2.

Australia Top Bowler

The likes of Tabraiz Shamsi, Adil Rashid and Wanindu Hasaranga have all had joy here over the past few years in T20Is and as we know, they're all spinners.

Adam Zampa was a bit unlucky not to have won this market on Wednesday, bowling beautifully for his 2/20, only to see our man Abbott take a third wicket in the last over of the match to get the better of him.

The little Melbourne Stars leggie seems to get better and better and should have every chance on this Cardiff wicket at 13/5.

Abbott has been cut from 4/1 to 16/5 and we expect him to be in the game, too. Stoinis bowled three overs on Wednesday, taking one wicket, and could be of interest at 5/1; but we're put off by the fact you never know how many overs he'll get, so it's too much of a risk. Zampa it is.
