Thursday 9th July 2026, 16:00

Spain and Belgium have faced each other twice before at a FIFA World Cup, with the Red Devils triumphing on penalties after a 1-1 draw in their 1986 quarter-final tie before La Roja exacted revenge, of sorts, with a 2-1 group-stage victory in 1990. The two sides lock horns at the 2026 World Cup, once again in the quarter-finals, with this match taking place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Friday (12pm local, 8pm BST, BBC One).

Below are my Spain vs Belgium Bet Builder Tips, with one of the world's best players backed to pose big problems...

Match Result - Spain

Spain made a slow start to the tournament, drawing 0-0 with Cape Verde in their first group game, but they've now won four consecutive matches, scoring nine times and not conceding a single goal.

Belgium's path to the quarter-finals has been rockier as they kicked off their group-stage campaign with back-to-back draws with Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0) before putting New Zealand (5-1) to the sword, while they were on the verge of a round-of-32 exit to Senegal before goals from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans sent the tie to extra-time, with the latter converting from the penalty spot to secure a 3-2 victory for the Red Devils.

Impressively, the USA were dusted aside 4-1 in the last 16, but Spain represent several steps up in class from all the teams they have faced so far in North America.

Belgium have some dangerous attacking weapons but Spain are so stable that it would be a surprise if the former were able to score more than once, while Rudi Garcia's side look vulnerable at the back, and you'd expect Luis de la Fuente's charges to take full advantage of any errors.

Player 2+ Shots on Target (Sub Switch) - Lamine Yamal (ESP)

Spain's superstar forward Lamine Yamal has only struck once at the World Cup, opening the scoring in his side's 4-0 group-stage thrashing of Saudi Arabia, but he's still been giving goalkeepers a run for their money.

The 18-year-old has registered seven shots on target across his four competition starts, recording at least two in three, including La Roja's 1-0 win over Portugal in the last 16.

I think he'll probably score on Thursday, but 2+ shots on target is probably the safer bet for a Bet Builder.

Betfred's Sub Switch rolls your bet to the oncoming substitute, so you stay in the game, even when your player doesn’t.

Spain vs Belgium Odds

Player 2+ Shots (Sub Switch) - Charles De Ketelaere (BEL)

Charles De Ketelaere failed to score in his first three appearances at this year's World Cup, but he was given the nod to lead the line against the USA ahead of Lukaku and repaid his manager's faith handsomely, scoring twice.

The 25-year-old, who averaged 1.9 shots per 90 for Atalanta in the 2025/26 Serie A season, started Belgium's opening game against Egypt, a 1-1 draw, and failed to take a shot before being replaced in the 66th minute by Lukaku, who managed two efforts in half the time. So, with Betfred's Sub Switch, De Ketelaere to take at least two shots would've been a winning selection against the Pharaohs, despite the former AC Milan man failing to pull the trigger himself.

Lukaku helped to land the bet again in the Red Devils' third and final group game against New Zealand, scoring off the bench despite only coming on for De Ketelaere, who shot once in the first half, in the 85th minute.

De Ketelaere took three shots against the USA, scoring, of course, twice, with his replacement Lukaku netting again, too.

Spain haven't conceded a goal yet at this tournament, but Portugal's centre forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, shot three times in their last-16 tie, and between them, I think De Ketelaere and Lukaku can try their luck at least twice on Friday.

Player 2+ Fouls Won - Pedri (ESP)

FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri won 43 fouls in 29 La Liga appearances last season at an average of 1.8 per 90 minutes, and in the UEFA Champions League, he averaged 3.1 fouls won per 90, having been upended 24 times across nine games.

The 23-year-old's fouled-per-90 average at this World Cup is only 0.8, but on Friday, he'll be up against an aggressive Belgian midfield containing the talents of Tielemans and Nicolas Raskin, who are averaging 1.3 and 2.5 fouls per 90, respectively, at this tournament.

Pedri 2+ Fouls Won was a winning bet in Spain's final group game, a 1-0 win over Uruguay, who fouled him three times before his 60th-minute withdrawal for Fabian Ruiz, who was then taken down once.
