How to use a bet calculator
Bet calculators may sound complicated, but they're actually super simple to use. Think of them as the opposite of VAR.
Wondering how much you'll get if you win your bet? Just follow these three simple steps:
- Choose your bet type
- Enter your odds (in fractional, decimal or American format)
- Enter your stake (how much money you're placing on your bet)
Our Bet Calculator will then tell you your total returns and overall profits (your returns minus your stake).

What is Rule 4?
Tattersalls Rule 4(c) is a deduction that comes into play if a horse pulls out after you've placed your bet. The amount taken off your winnings depends on the non-runner's odds at the time it was withdrawn.
For example, if a horse is EVENS when it pulls out of the race, Rule 4 takes 45p off every £1 you'd win.

What is Each-way?
An each-way bet is two bets rolled into one. Half your stake backs your selection to win, the other half backs it to place.
If your each-way pick gets the job done, both parts pay out. If it doesn't quite get over the line but still finishes in the top few, you could still land a return. Think of it like backing the winner but giving yourself a safety net if things don't go perfectly to plan.
How many places get paid depends on the market. A five-runner race might only pay out on two places but a bigger race like the Grand National could pay up to seven.
What are the different types of odds?
There are many ways odds can be shown, but it all comes down to the same thing. What you bet, and what you get. The three main types of odds you'll see are fractional, decimal and American.
Fractional odds
Fractional odds are the OG of betting, stretching back to when football was played with an inflated pig's bladder, rather than inflated egos.
Originally created in the 18th century for horse racing, fractional odds consist of two numbers: the number on the left represents your potential profit and the number on the right shows your stake.
For example, 3/1 (three to one) means you'll win £3 profit with a £1 stake, taking your total return to £4 (stake + profit). Odds-on (1/2) means you'll get a 50p profit from a £1 stake.
Decimal odds
Decimal odds work in a similar way to fractional odds, but the number displayed shows the combined stake and profit for each pound you bet.
So, for example, 4.00 in decimal odds is the equivalent of 3/1 in fractional odds, returning £4 from a £1 stake. For odds-on bets, a 1/2 fractional odd would be displayed as 1.5. This means a £1.50 return from a winning £1 bet.
American odds
American odds are rarely used (other than in North America), but we've included them in our bet calculators in case you prefer to use them.
This type of odds is based around a $100 stake and come with a plus or minus. A plus number shows how much profit you'd make from a $100 bet, so a 3/1 price would show as +300. A minus number means odds-on, telling you how much you'd need to stake to win $100. For example, 1/2 shows as –200.
