Northampton vs Barnsley Prediction: McGoldrick to score again

It has not been an enjoyable season for Northampton Town fans and with ten straight defeats in all competitions, I’m sure supporters will be looking forward to the summer and plenty of change heading into their League Two campaign. They face a mid-table Barnsley side tonight (Tuesday) as they look to give their fans something to cheer.

It would be fair to say that interim manager Colin Calderwood has failed to halt the slide that has seen Northampton Town relegated from League One. Eight-straight defeats for him since his appointment has ended a run that has seen the Cobblers drop from 12th in the table to the floor of the division.

Before Calderwood, Kevin Nolan had been doing a solid job until a run of just one win in 16 matches saw their season crater out and the change in manager hasn’t seen a change in fortunes.

Barnsley have seen a similar - albeit less dramatic - slide that saw them drop-off from the fringes of play-off contention in March to a lower mid-table finish, with the Tykes currently sitting in 15th position in the table.

This match has all the hallmarks of an end-of-season game with very little riding on it. The winner will be the team who can show a smidgen of motivation with neither side having much more to play for.

Northampton vs Barnsley Odds:

Despite the run of ten-straight defeats in all competitions, Northampton are only 13/8 to win tonight with the Draw priced up at 11/4. Barnsley are the betting favourites at 7/5 but you may have expected them to be shorter considering recent form.

He might be 38-years-old but the former Republic of Ireland international has enjoyed a fruitful season with Barnsley, having netted 15 times. His second half to the campaign has been where he’s excelled, finding the back of the net on 13 occasions since the calendar turned over to 2026.

With Northampton having the joint-worst defence in the division, coupled with their run of poor form and having shipped five at the weekend to Cardiff, backing the top scorer of the opposition to score anytime at an odds-against price feels like the way to go.

Bet 2 - Over 3.5 Goals @ 13/8

Barnsley have the best record for hitting Over 3.5 Goals in League One, doing so nearly half the time at 45%. That is really quite high and when you consider Northampton have conceded at least three in four of their past six outings, this could be a high-scoring game at the Sixfields Stadium.
