Football Bet of the Day: More drama from the National League

Football bet of the day

The National League produced the most entertaining end to a non-league season ever on Saturday, as York City won the title in the 113th minute at Rochdale.

That drama is unlikely to be beaten, but after a wonderful regular league season, the play-offs swing into action. On Wednesday night, Robbie Savage’s Forest Green Rovers travel to face Boreham Wood, looking to cause a shock. You can find my Football Bet of the Day down below.

Boreham Wood vs Forest Green Rovers Odds

Obviously all the attention this season in the fifth tier has been around Rochdale and York’s incredible battle for the title, with both teams scoring well over 100 points and the eventual champions hitting an amazing 114 goals.

However, Boreham Wood’s goalscoring feats have perhaps gone under the radar, given what the leaders achieved. Luke Garrard’s side scored 95 goals in the regular 46-game  season, averaging over two-per-game and outsourcing every team other than the champions in the National League.

Even Rochdale only managed 88 goals, which makes The Wood seriously dangerous contenders when it comes to these play-offs. They finished fourth in the end, racking up an impressive 90 points, nine more than their opponents on Wednesday night, Forest Green Rovers.

The higher league position means that Boreham Wood get to play in front of their own fans for this one-legged match, which is a significant factor. The hosts have the third-best home record in the league, having won a remarkable 17 of their 23 home games - the same amount as York managed.

Football Bet of the Day Stats

  • Boreham Wood scored 95 goals this season - only champions York City scored more
  • The hosts have won 17 of their 23 home games

I’m keen to back them to win this game, given FGR have been pretty average travellers, winning eight, drawing seven and losing eight regualr-season away games. That ranks them 10th in the away table, which isn’t anything to write home about.

Savage’s side have also to their credit, been excellent going forward, scoring 82 goals this term, and I think this game will certainly contain goals given the strength of both attacks. However, I believe that Boreham Wood will be too strong, with Matt Rush scoring 26 goals this term and likely to strike again.

A home win with both teams getting on the scoresheet appeals most at 15/8.
