Katie Walsh’s Grand National Tips: I Am Maximus can reign again

The Aintree Grand National takes place at 4pm on Saturday, and we’ve teamed up with former jockey and racing pundit Katie Walsh, who knows all about this race, having ridden Seabass to a third-place finish in 2012 behind Neptune Collonges.
Katie has provided two Grand National tips for us, plus a ‘good thing’ in the opener at Aintree on day three of the Festival.
Katie Walsh Grand National Tips
- 12:45 - Maghull Novices’ Chase - Salvator Mundi @ 5/6

16:00 - Grand National - I Am Maximus @ 7/1
To win the National, you now need a Grade 1 horse, the way the race has changed, I Am Maximus nearly should have won at Christmas. He’s a class horse; if he puts up any kind of performance, he’ll be the one to beat. I’m not surprised that Paul Townend has picked I Am Maximus. It's very hard to jump off a National-winning horse that’s in good form.
I do believe that I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West are streets ahead, ability-wise, of Iroko and Jagwar.
I can’t get away from I Am Maximus with the weight, considering Nick Rockett won last year carrying 11-8, and I think I Am Maximus would have had him in his back pocket had he run on Saturday.

16:00 - Grand National - Gorgeous Tom @ 25/1
One at a price, I like Grade 1 form, so I’d probably go for Henry De Bromhead with Gorgeous Tom at 25/1. He’s consistent and has that Grade 1 form behind him as well.
I like a bit of Oscars Brother. The one thing about the National is that it always seems to throw up a story, and that would be a big fairytale for brothers Daniel and Connor King.

Elsewhere, there’s great racing again on Saturday, away from the Grand National.
I think that Paul Townend could be off to a great day on Saturday in the National, but I think before all that happens, I think he’ll win the first with Salvador Mundi in the Donnelly colours.
This horse absolutely bolted up at Thurles the last day; he won by 28 lengths, absolutely bolted up. He didn’t go to Cheltenham; he comes here fresh, this has been the plan, and I think it could be a great day for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend.
