Dolphins sea eagles

Kieran Foran’s speedy transition into coaching comes under the spotlight on Thursday when he leads the Manly Sea Eagles for the first time against the Dolphins at Kayo Stadium (19:00 local, 10:00 BST, Watch NRL).

Anthony Seibold was fired after three straight defeats to start the year, and his former assistant is now the Manly head coach. Read on for my Dolphins vs Sea Eagles predictions, and there’s full team news and the latest odds from Betfred too.

Dolphins vs Sea Eagles Odds

The bookies have gone with the form team in this one, pricing the Dolphins up at 4/11 despite their 26-12 reverse to the Broncos last time out.

The winless Sea Eagles are 23/10 to win in 80 minutes, with the draw an 18/1 shot.

Manly get a 9.5-point start in the two-way handicap, with their price narrowed to 20/21 in that context and the Dolphins 4/5 to beat the edge.

Team News

Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf is set to name an unchanged XIII, with only Kurt Donoghoe’s return on the bench providing a point of difference from the 19 which lost the Battle of Brisbane.

Oryn Keeley drops out of the squad to allow for Donoghoe’s inclusion.

Rugby League Odds

Foran names Clayton Faulalo on the wing as part of his first selection as interim head coach. The 25-year-old replaces the suspended Jason Saab.

The big decision comes in him not calling up Joey Walsh to the matchday 19 despite a huge push from supporters for the scrum-half to be brought in.

Elsewhere, Ethan Bullemor is included on the bench after pulling out in the warm-up before last week’s loss to the Roosters due to a troublesome Achilles.

Dolphins by 13+ @ 11/10

They might have trailed throughout in last week’s derby defeat to the Broncos, but the Dolphins appear to be tracking much as they have in previous seasons.

With two 30+ scores in four matches thus far, Woolf’s side retain the strike threat which made them a scintillating watch last year.

Having the likes of Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa in your spine instantly makes you an excitable team, while they also have an outside-back division to contend with anyone.

This week they should be able to make hay against a reeling Manly. While the change of coach at Brookvale ought to provoke a response from the Sea Eagles, it’s hard to imagine a significant boost in fortunes without knowing more about what Foran might bring.

The former Kiwi international was still a player with the Titans as recently as last September, and one has to believe this is a big step up which will take some time to pay off for the Sea Eagles.

All signs point to the Dolphins winning with plenty to spare.

Sea Eagles Under 17.5 Total Points @ 7/5

While Manly are normally good for a few tries given their flair in possession, they have struggled so far this term.

They did notch 28 points against the Raiders on opening night, but Canberra have gone on to display their weak underbelly time and again since then. And even that performance came with attack in short spurts as they came crawling back from 28-14 down with seven minutes left to force extra-time.

Their last two matches have seen them twice score 16 points in defeat, and with a real need to tighten up there arguably will have been a bigger focus this week on their D rather than ball work.

Given everything, I just can’t back Manly to notch 18 or more points, and find the 7/5 about the Under hugely appealing to the punter as a consequence.
