Newcastle United head to Camp Nou in the knowledge that victory would see them through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the very first time.
Having ended the club's long trophy drought last season, Eddie Howe's side have the opportunity to further cement their legacy on Tyneside on what has the potential to be the Magpies' greatest European night. A formidable Barcelona side that has won every home fixture since moving back to their refurbished stadium in November, will have other ideas.
Last week's first leg was edged by Newcastle, who were good value for their 1-0 lead when it finally came in the 86th minute through Harvey Barnes. However, there was a sting in the tail for the Geordie faithful, with the Spanish champions winning a late penalty, which was converted by Lamine Yamal.
The teenager was rested on Saturday as Barça won two more penalties in a comfortable 5-2 victory over Sevilla. Raphinha grabbed a hat-trick in that game, while João Cancelo excelled from left-back, drawing the first two spot-kicks and scoring a fine solo goal late in the contest.
While satisfied with a win that maintained his team's four-point lead at the top of La Liga, Flick was unusually critical of his players in his post-match comments, suggesting a repeat performance might lead to Champions League elimination on Wednesday night.
His team have looked vulnerable defensively for much of the campaign, and they struggled to live with Newcastle's physicality and pacy front three in the first leg. However, the German will be reassured by how consistent Barcelona have been at home this season. They've won 15 matches in a row in front of their own fans since losing to PSG in the league phase.
Newcastle may sense they missed a real opportunity last week by not securing an advantage of one or two goals to take into this second leg. They've been much less convincing on their travels this season, although that trend has started to shift over the past two months.
They gave a good account of themselves away to defending champions PSG in their final league-stage fixture. Howe's men have won four of their last five on the road overall, after surprising Chelsea with a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
An injury to Bruno Guimarães has left them short in the midfield department, but Jacob Ramsey has stepped up in recent weeks to reach his best level since moving to St James' Park in the summer. He impressed alongside Sandro Tonali and Joelinton in the first leg, while Lewis Hall also did an exceptional job of keeping Yamal quiet.
It'll be tougher in the Catalan capital, but the game could be won and lost in midfield, with Pedri so often the player that makes everything tick for the home side. The Premier League outfit may drop a bit deeper in the second leg, but they'll back themselves to create opportunities on the break behind Barça's high line.
Team News:
Little has changed on the selection front for Barcelona since the first leg. They are still missing Jules Koundé, Frenkie de Jong, Andreas Christensen and Alejandro Balde to injuries.
Eric García and Ferran Torres are the players most likely to come into the side following last week's clash. The striker position has been a problem for the Catalans in recent weeks, with neither Robert Lewandowski nor Ferran in good form in front of goal.
As for Newcastle, they'll be missing Guimarães again, while Lewis Miley, Fabian Schär and Emil Krafth are sidelined through injury. Illness prevented Sandro Tonali from featuring at Chelsea on Saturday, but he's expected to return to the lineup at Camp Nou.
Anthony Gordon was also unwell last week, leading to him only making the bench in the first leg. The 25-year-old returned to lead the line and score the only goal at Stamford Bridge, and should feature from the off.
Barcelona vs Newcastle Predicted Lineups
- Barcelona: J. Garcia, Cancelo, Araujo, Cubarsi, Martin; Bernal, Pedri, Yamal, Fermin, Raphinha, Lewandowski
- Newcastle: Ramsdale, Livramento, Thiaw, Burn, Hall, Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton, Elanga, Willock, Gordon
Match Odds:
Barcelona are the 8/15 favourites to win this match in 90 minutes, while you can back the Draw at 18/5. Newcastle are priced at 9/2, while they're given a 5/2 chance of progressing from the tie.
The assumption is that this clash will produce goals, with Both teams to score is priced at 4/9. The hosts are on offer at 6/5 to score over 2.5 goals, while they're given a 23/10 chance of winning the match to nil.
Newcastle are available at 13/8 to win either half. They're on offer at 18/5 to be ahead at the break, while you can back the Magpies to score in both halves at 3/1.
Barça will be hoping Yamal can have a bigger impact on this game than was the case last week. He's priced at 4/1 to score first, and 21/20 to score anytime. You can also back Raphinha to build on his weekend hat-trick by grabbing a goal at 11/8.
Gordon is likely to offer the main goal threat for the visitors. He has already scored 10 times in 11 Champions League appearances this term, and is given a 9/1 chance of scoring first at Camp Nou, while he's priced at 12/5 to score anytime.

Barcelona vs Newcastle Stats
- Both games so far this season have seen Both Teams to Score be a winner. (1-2, 1-1).
- Anthony Gordon (10) is surprisingly the second-top scorer in the competition behind only Kylian Mbappe (13).
- Marcus Rashford (1.49) has the best Goals + Assist per 90 number in the 25/26 Champions League.
Bet 1 - Under 4.5 goals & Most corners - Barcelona @ 10/11
The second leg of this tie is likely to take on a very different pattern to the first. Newcastle will be more conservative, and the onus will be on Barcelona to dominate the play and force the tempo.
The Magpies will take confidence from grinding out a low-scoring draw in Paris earlier in the year, with Howe using a back three on that occasion. They did good work off the ball in the first leg, and have barely put a foot wrong defensively in their last two matches, with neither Barça nor Chelsea scoring from open play.
If they can find a similar level, this may be slightly tighter than many are expecting, but the match is likely to be primarily played in Newcastle's half of the pitch. The visitors will fancy their chances of coping well with their opponents' set-piece threat, and I'm using the Bet Builder to back Under 4.5 goals and Most corners - Barcelona at 10/11.
Bet 2 - Second-half result - Barcelona @ 4/5
From a statistical perspective, one of the most striking things heading into this clash is the difference between the two teams' respective first and second-half records.
Newcastle have been very good before the break in the Champions League this season, scoring 15 times and conceding only twice. By contrast, Barcelona have a goal difference of -2 before the interval, but they've come good in the second half, scoring 17 times and conceding on only seven occasions.
That trend has also been evident in Barça's home league games. They've scored 26 and conceded only twice in the second half after the interval in front of their own fans in La Liga.
Both sides have had hectic schedules so far in 2026. This is already Newcastle's 22nd match of the calendar year, while it's Barcelona's 20th. Having also already faced the two Manchester clubs this month, the concern from a visiting perspective may be that this is one game too many, and I'm backing the hosts in the Second-half Result market at 4/5.
