Bayern Munich vs Atalanta Prediction: Historic comeback looks unlikely

Bayern Munich take on Atalanta in the second leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League (20:00 GMT, TNT Sports 4) with a 6-1 aggregate advantage. Such a deficit would feel insurmountable, but the Serie A side could look to exploit Bayern’s goalkeeping crisis and make this one competitive.

Team News

The headline here is Bayern’s distinct lack of fortune in the goalkeeper position. Icon of club and country Manuel Neuer is recovering from a calf strain. His creditable deputy, Jonas Urbig, took a blow to the head in the first leg and is a doubt. Third-choice stopper Leon Klanac is nursing a thigh issue.

Urbig will be assessed ahead of kick-off and his participation is in doubt. Bayern are not expected to risk him unduly, given the sensitivity of head injuries and the 6-1 lead from the first leg.

If Urbig is rested then step forward 16-year-old Leonard Prescott. The New York-born, Germany under-17 international can usually be found in the Bayern under-19s set-up. But Kompany has been left with little choice and the noise from the Allianz Arena suggests the club think the boy is ready.  

Elsewhere, head coach Vincent Kompany will be without Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito through injury and Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise through suspension.

Giacomo Raspadori is a doubt for Atalanta while the Serie A side are also missing Yunus Musah through suspension.

Bayern are 1/3 to win on the night while their opposition are priced at 5/1 for the victory in 90 minutes. Atalanta can be backed at 50/1 for the miracle turnaround if they win the overall tie.

Harry Kane is the unsurprising leader of the scoring market. The England captain is 12/5 to strike first, 5/2 to score the last goal or 1/2 to bag any time.

Bayern are more than comfortable here, but Atalanta will be encouraged by the German side’s goalkeeping struggles. Prescott is a well-regarded prospect at the Allianz, but it is a little soon in his development for a big Champions League clash.

With nothing to lose away from home, I can see Atalanta testing the 16-year-old and having some success. Raffaele Palladino’s men can take a lead as they launch an all-out assault. Just don’t expect Bayern to take it lying down.

Over 3.5 goals @ 10/11

The first leg had seven goals, albeit six of them went one way. Bayern have scored the third-most goals in this season’s Champions League. Without labouring the point, the Bundesliga overlords will likely be fielding a goalkeeper who was 10 when Bayern last won the competition in 2020.

This match has goals written all over it, whichever way they swing. Over 3.5 should be a doddle.
