Alaves vs Girona Prediction: Away side to get a result

Girona are targeting back-to-back Monday night wins when they visit Mendizorrotza, following an inspired 2-1 victory over Catalan rivals Barcelona seven days ago.
Deportivo Alavés provide the opposition, with both sides in the bottom half and in a relegation fight that involves up to half of the teams in the Spanish top flight. Check out Mark Sochon's Alaves vs Girona predictions down below.

While Real Oviedo and Levante are likely to go down, there are still few clues as to who the third team will be.
Of these two clubs, Alavés are in more danger. They are three points behind their opponents, having lost 50% of their league fixtures this term. Despite that, there is still a sense that Chacho Coudet is doing a solid job with limited resources at his disposal.
The Basque club were 2-1 winners at Espanyol at the end of January, but they’ll be disappointed with a return of only one point from two games against Getafe and Sevilla since then. They held a one-man advantage for more than 70 minutes at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán last weekend, but still needed a second-half goal from Toni Martínez just to salvage a draw.
They tend to play with a 4-4-2 system, with Martínez partnering Lucas Boyé up front. Those two both carry a physical threat, and they’re each on five goals in La Liga 2025/26. The only other player to have scored more than once for the Babazorros this season is winger Carlos Vicente, who left to join Birmingham City in January.
The decision to sell the dangerous 26-year-old could still prove costly for Alavés, and they must look on with envy at a club like Girona, who had the resources necessary to pull themselves out of the mess they were in earlier in the season. Following a host of late summer moves, they also added goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, as well as midfielders Claudio Echeverri and Fran Beltrán in January.
The latter made his fourth appearance for his new club off the bench last Monday, and it was a night to remember for the ex-Celta Vigo player. Beltrán’s cool finish in the 86th minute sealed a 2-1 comeback win over Barcelona.
It was a deserved victory for Míchel’s side. They caused real problems, particularly in the final 30 minutes, as Barça’s defence crumbled against waves of attacks from the home team. Despite only having 29% of the ball, Girona created 2.86 xG and five big chances across the 90 minutes, hitting the target on nine occasions.
This will be a very different kind of match, where they will enjoy a much larger share of the possession. The club that forms part of the City Football Group had been going through a mixed spell prior to that huge derby victory. They started 2026 with three straight victories, but could only take two points from their subsequent games against Getafe, Oviedo and Sevilla.
Team News
January signing Ville Koski is the only fitness concern for Alavés. The 24-year-old is yet to feature for his new club, and will most likely play a back-up role when he returns.
Some changes are expected from the side that laboured to a draw against 10 men last weekend. Jonny Otto should return at left-back, while Pablo Ibáñez is pushing for a recall in midfield. Martínez and Boyé ought to lead the line again.
As for Girona, Míchel has little reason to change the team that was so impressive against Barcelona a week ago. The most likely alteration would be a recall for Beltrán in midfield, which may see either Axel Witsel or Iván Martín drop to the bench.
The visitors are still missing Portu, Ter Stegen, Donny van de Beek, and Álex Moreno to injuries. Influential midfielder Azzedine Ounahi is fit again, but is only expected to feature in the second half following a lengthy layoff.
Alaves vs Girona Lineups (Predicted)
- Alaves - Sivera; Tenaglia, Garces, Pacheco, Otto; Calebe, Blanco, Suarez, Alena; Martinez, Boye
- Girona - Gazzaniga; Rincon, Reis, Blind, Martinez; Tsygankov, Lemar, Witsel, Martin, Gil; Vanat
Match Odds:
Alavés are the 13/10 favourites to win this match, while the Draw is on offer at 2/1. You can back Girona to build on last week's success with another victory at odds of 12/5.
The hosts are priced at 4/6 to win either half, while they're on offer at 11/5 to win the game to nil. Alavés are also available at 13/8 to score over 1.5 goals in the match.
Both teams to score is priced at 1/1. You can back Girona to score over 1.5 goals at 5/2, while Míchel's side are available at 21/10 to keep a clean sheet.
The Alavés front two clearly stand out as the most likely sources of a goal from a home perspective. Boyé is the 10/3 favourite to score first, while he's on offer at 7/5 to score anytime. You can also back Martínez to get on the scoresheet at odds of 2/1.
Girona's top scorer is Vladyslav Vanat. The seven-goal striker is priced at 9/2 to score first, and 9/5 to score anytime.

Alaves vs Girona Stats
- The last three head-to-heads have ended 1-0
- Girona beat Barcelona last time out
Bet 1 - Girona or Draw & Under 3.5 goals @ 20/21
Girona have to be feeling good about themselves after causing so many problems for Barça last week. They’ve also been much more resilient defensively of late. A return of only five goals conceded in seven league outings so far in 2026 represents a massive improvement from the Catalans.
Only one of their away games so far this term has produced more than three goals in total, while Alavés’ matches are averaging just 2.13 goals per 90 minutes. With both sides ranking in the bottom five for goals scored, a tight contest looks likely here.
Girona will likely see a draw as a good result as they bid to inch closer towards safety. They are playing well enough to get at least a point, and I’m using the Bet Builder to back Girona or Draw and Under 3.5 goals at 20/21.
Bet 2 - Highest scoring half - Second half @ 6/5
Both sides have good records when it comes to keeping it tight in the opening 45 minutes. Alavés are an organised defensive unit, and they’ve only let in three first-half goals at home all season in the league.
Aside from a shocking first half at Villarreal early on, when they were 4-0 down after 28 minutes, Girona have also tended to keep it tight in the first half away from home. They’ve been 1-0 up at the break in 50% of their road fixtures in La Liga this term, but second-half performances have been less impressive, with 63% of their away goals conceded after the interval.
This is another match that may open up later on, with the onus on Alavés to take more risks and chase three points at home to a bottom-half rival. I’m backing the Second Half in the Highest Scoring Half market at 6/5.
