Barcelona vs Levante Preview:
Barcelona take on Levante this Sunday on the back of what was surely their worst week since the appointment of Hansi Flick in 2024.
A first-half collapse in their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Atlético Madrid saw them lose 4-0 at the Estadio Metropolitano. Four days later, they were beaten again, this time by a 2-1 margin against Catalan rivals Girona.
Flick has won all four domestic trophies on offer to date, while also guiding Barça to the brink of a Champions League final. However, he is not immune from criticism, and there has been plenty of that over the past week, with reports suggesting even his own dressing room is unhappy with the continued use of the high line against strong opponents.
Atleti registered eight shots on target and created 2.37 xG in the cup match. Girona then bettered those figures with nine shots on target and 2.86 xG on Monday night, with individual errors in both games compounding a sorry state of defensive affairs for the reigning Spanish champions.
Flick is very unlikely to totally abandon an approach that has largely delivered as he approaches two years in the Barcelona hotseat. The German will believe that with Raphinha available again, and Pedri nearing fitness, they'll soon be able to dominate matches and suppress their opponents to such an extent that a shaky backline is not exposed anywhere near as frequently.
At home in La Liga, Barça still boast a 100% record, with only five goals conceded. That suggests Flick's methods are working when they play in the league in front of their own fans, although they have only hosted one of the top seven sides so far.
Levante are unlikely to put a dent in that record. They've also had a dreadful week, losing home derbies against both Valencia and Villarreal without scoring. That has firmly burst the bubble of the recently-appointed Luís Castro, who had made a positive start with eight points from his opening five league matches.
It's now three defeats on the spin for the Granotes. Their tally of 18 points from 24 games leaves them in deep trouble in a league that saw Leganés relegated despite hitting the magic 40-point mark last term.
It's tough to see how they beat the drop from this position, but they can take a degree of belief from the knowledge that three of their four wins have come away from home. That includes a 4-0 success at Girona earlier in the season, while they were 3-0 victors at Sevilla at the start of January in Castro's first game.
However, they are still the team with the worst defensive record in La Liga heading into matchday 25, with an average of 1.71 goals conceded per game.
Worryingly, the goals have also dried up for their two biggest attacking threats. Top scorer Karl Etta Eyong has gone 12 league appearances without a goal, while Iván Romero is on an even longer drought, with his last strike coming back in September against Getafe.
Team News:
There are no fresh selection issues for the hosts following those back-to-back defeats. Gavi and Andreas Christensen remain sidelined with long-term issues, while this game is still likely to come too soon for Pedri, who is closer to a return.
Marcus Rashford should be fit enough to play some part, following a knee problem that has hampered him over the past fortnight. Robert Lewandowski and Alejandro Balde are strong candidates for recalls, after only making the bench at Montilivi on Monday.
Levante are missing Kervin Arriaga due to suspension again, following his late red card in last weekend's Valencia derby. Winger Roger Brugué is out long-term, while Pablo Martínez is a significant new absentee in midfield.
The likes of Etta Eyong and Jon Ander Olasagasti could rotate in, after a rearranged midweek league fixture at home to Villarreal, which ended in a 1-0 defeat.
FC Barcelona vs UD Levante Lineups (Predicted)
- FC Barcelona: J. Garcia, Kounde, Cubarsi, E. Garcia, Balde, Fermin, De Jong, Yamal, Olmo, Raphinha, Lewandowski
- UD Levante: Ryan, Toljan, De la Fuente, Moreno, Sanchez, Olasagasti, Raghouber, Tunde, Alvarez, Romero, Eyong
Match Odds:
The odds for this encounter point to a mismatch, with Barcelona priced at 1/9 to win the game, while the Draw is on offer at 9/1. Levante are available at 16/1 to leave Camp Nou with a highly unexpected three points.
You can back the hosts to score over 3.5 goals at 10/11, while they are priced at 8/11 to win both halves. Barcelona to win and Both teams to score is on offer at 6/5.
If you're expecting Flick's side to run into trouble for the third match in a row, you can back Levante to win or draw at 5/1. The visitors are also available at 1/1 with a +3.00 Handicap.
Lewandowski leads the way as the 12/5 favourite to score first, while he's on offer at 21/10 to score two or more goals. Alternative options in the Anytime Goalscorer market include Raphinha at 8/13, Lamine Yamal at 8/11, and Dani Olmo at 1/1. Levante's Etta Eyong is priced at 3/1 to get on the scoresheet.

FC Barcelona vs UD Levante Stats
- Barcelona (69%) have the best possession stats in La Liga. Second-placed Real Madrid are down at 59%
- Levante (29.7%) are one of only three times to get less than three shots out of ten on target.
- Karl Etta Eyong (14) is Levante's top player in terms of Shots on Target. Six Barcelona players have more.
Bet 1 - Barcelona -2.00 Handicap @ 8/11
Having secured direct entry into the round-of-16 in the Champions League, Barcelona have free midweeks either side of this game. That should leave Flick in a position to just pick his best team, and he'll be expecting a response after a nightmare first half against Atleti, and a dreadful second half at Girona.
On home soil it has been a different story. Barça are averaging 3.09 goals scored per game in La Liga, and only 0.45 goals conceded per 90 minutes. In each case, those are comfortably the best records in the Spanish top flight. They've already won five home fixtures by margins of three or more goals.
Levante are starting to feel like a lost cause, and their confidence levels will be at rock bottom having suffered home defeats against their two closest top-flight rivals over the past seven days.
This feels like the perfect match for the hosts to have to bounce back and restore some belief with a big win, and I'm backing Barcelona -2.00 Handicap at 8/11.
Bet 2 - Raphinha to score anytime & Lamine Yamal 1+ assists @ 12/5 via Bet Builder
The two chief protagonists for Barcelona should be Raphinha and Yamal. The Brazilian ought to be sharper after returning from injury for just over an hour at Girona on Monday. Despite various fitness issues, the ex-Leeds man is still scoring at an impressive rate of a goal every 117 minutes in La Liga this term.
Yamal will be among the players looking to carve out chances for both Raphinha and whoever starts up front. No player in the Spanish top flight can better the teenager's tally of eight assists so far this term.
Against the worst defence in the division, I can see Barça's attacking stars all enjoying positive afternoons. I'm using the Bet Builder to back Raphinha to score anytime and Yamal 1+ assists at 12/5.
