Horse Racing Tips: Mount Athos calls at Kempton

Kempton stages a competitive seven-race card on Wednesday evening under the lights, the action getting underway at 17.00 and concluding at 20.00, with the feature race a valuable Class 2 handicap over 7f, due off at 18:30.

17:30 Kempton - Free Your Spirit @ 4/5

The Richard Hughes-trained FREE SPIRIT is clearly held in some regard, just on the fact he was gambled into odds of just 1/3f on last month’s debut over a mile at Lingfield.

The son of Starman touched 10/11 when betting opened on course, but attracted a wave of support before the off.

However, he was slowly away and never looked like justifying that confidence - finishing fourth of the five runners and beaten a total of three lengths.

That experience wasn’t lost on him, though, and that, combined with a drop back to 7f, brought about a far more polished display at Wolverhampton just five days afterwards, the colt quickening up nicely inside the final furlong to score by a widening three lengths from the reopposing Okiru under Billy Loughnane.

He’s picked up a 7lb penalty for that, but Donagh Murphy’s claim means he’s effectively unpenalised and he can score at Kempton.

18:30 Kempton - Mount Athos @ 10/3

The James Tate-trained MOUNT ATHOS has an outstanding strike-rate on the All-Weather and, while he faces no easy task under top weight, he’s sure to give a good account at a track he relishes.

The seven-year-old has won six of his 12 outings on the artificial surfaces, including a perfect 5-5 over today’s course-and-distance. 

He’s repeatedly run to Racing Post Ratings of 110 and above, including when placed in Listed company at Deauville in November, so has obvious claims off his official mark of 106 - a rating he defied when scoring here last March.

19:30 Kempton - Cruden @ 5/1

There was a lot to like about the run of CRUDEN when runner-up on his debut for Dan Horsford at Wolverhampton last month, and, with fitness now on his side, he makes plenty of appeal in an open-looking handicap.

The five-year-old is onto his third trainer, having initially started out with Jessica Harrington in Ireland before having a short spell with the now retired James Ewart.

He was previously known as a hurdler, having won a Cork maiden in October 2024 prior to finding one too good in three of his four outings for Ewart, most recently when beaten a nose on his return from wind surgery at Carlisle in April.

However, back after eight months off when reverting to the Flat at Wolverhampton last month, he made an early bid for glory and stuck well to his task once headed. 

He’s up just 1lb for that, which shouldn't be an inconvenience.
