Team News

The hosts have midfielder Carlos Baleba away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon. Yakuba Minteh will also miss out after going off with a thigh injury against West Ham United.

Veteran midfielder Solly March remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury. He is yet to feature at all this season. Stefanos Tzimas’s ACL tear last month ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Brighton are also without long-term absentee Adam Webster after surgery on his ACL in pre-season.

Burnley are also depleted, with ex-Manchester United pair Axel Tuanzebe and Hannibal Mejbri representing their nations at Afcon.

Maxime Esteveze went off injured against Newcastle United and is not expected to return here. Zeki Amdouni and Josh Cullen are long term absentees with serious cruciate ligament injuries.

Jordan Beyer is out of action after a hamstring problem stalled his comeback from a long-term knee injury.

Brighton vs Burnley Predicted Lineups

  • Brighton: Verbruggen; Veltman, Van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu; Ayari, Hinshelwood; Gruda, Gomez, De Cuyper; Welbeck
  • Burnley: Dubravka; Laurent, Ekdal, Humphreys; Walker, Ugochukwu, Luis, Pires; Edwards, Broja, Tchaouna

Brighton vs Burnley Odds

Brighton are favoured at 1/2 to triumph at the Amex. Burnley are marketed at 6/1 while you can back the stalemate at 7/2.

Burnley are 6/1 to keep a clean sheet for just a fourth time this season. Brighton are 23/20 to score in both halves.

Brighton vs Burnley Stats

  • Striker Danny Welbeck has more league goals for Brighton (41) than he scored at Manchester United, Arsenal and Watford put together (38).
  • If Burnley are relegated this season, they move second on the all-time list behind Norwich City (six) for the most Premier League relegations immediately following promotion.

Draw and both teams to score @ 9/2

To put it bluntly, these teams just do not win very often. Brighton fans might view the visit of 19th-placed Burnley as something of a free hit. After all, the Clarets are without a victory in their last 10 games. But the Seagulls are winless in their last six themselves.

Which is why I fancy these two misfiring forces to cancel each other out at the Amex. But I do fancy goals. Burnley have the third-worst defensive record in the league this season, conceding 37. Brighton are in a healthier position, having conceded less than eight other sides. But they have shipped two or more goals in four of their last six outings.

I think the ingredients are in place for a score draw in this one. Defences failing but two teams lacking that killer instinct to snatch the tie outright.

Danny Welbeck to score anytime @ 11/10

The eternal improver, the finest of footballing Cabernet Sauvignons. Welbeck continues to get better with age. After flattering to deceive at Manchester United and Arsenal, via a confusing half-season at Watford, Welbeck has flourished at the Amex.

Eight goals in 18 outings has had some calling for an England return for a player last capped in 2018. Thomas Tuchel is unlikely to pull that particular rabbit out of his hat, but that is a testament to how well-renowned Welbeck is at an age when most footballers are considering wrapping it up or taking a dump-truck of dollars from Saudi Arabia.

Welbeck is the most likely man to pop up with a goal here. While he missed on against West Ham, he is also Brighton’s penalty taker. Welbeck spent his 20s getting written off, but in his 30s it is hard to back against him finding the net.
