Real Betis and Barcelona clash on Saturday in what tends to be one of the highest-scoring fixtures in La Liga.
Both teams have netted in every meeting in Seville since a 5-0 Barcelona win in January 2018. There have been five or more goals on five occasions since then, with Manuel Pellegrini's side usually keen to take the game to the Catalan giants.
There'll be a different venue for this latest clash. Real Betis have moved into the 70,000-capacity Estadio La Cartuja while the Benito Villamarín undergoes redevelopment. They've made a reasonably good start to life in their temporary home, with six wins and only two defeats so far in the stadium in all competitions.
Betis' overall form is also really strong. They've lost just one of their last 17 matches in all competitions. That's despite their playmaker Isco missing virtually all of those games.
They were also missing Antony in the Seville derby last weekend. However, even without Isco and the in-form Brazilian, Betis were much superior to their bitter city rivals. Pablo Fornals scored a fine solo goal in a 2-0 win.
Los Verdiblancos were also in Copa del Rey action on Wednesday, with various fringe players getting their chance in a 4-1 victory against minnows Torrent. Summer signing Rodrigo Riquelme scored a hat-trick in his best showing to date for Pellegrini's side.
Barcelona also played in midweek, but in La Liga rather than the cup. They hosted Atlético Madrid in a key top-of-the-table clash. It didn't start well for Hansi Flick and his team, with Álex Baena the latest player to breach their high line to race clear and score a goal.
However, it was a strong Barça performance from that point onwards, and they were good value for their 3-1 victory. Raphinha, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres grabbed the goals in the most significant game since their long-awaited move back to Camp Nou.
That was a fifth straight league win for Barça since a 2-1 defeat in El Clásico. They were second best against Real Madrid in that game, but have claimed six more points than their rivals since then, to regain top spot in the Spanish top flight.
With Pedri and Raphinha back to full fitness, they looked a bit more like the team that excelled last season on Wednesday night. Their ability to press aggressively from the front improves dramatically when the Brazilian is available, which in turn helps to protect an unconvincing defence.
Team News:
Despite recently returning from a leg fracture, Isco has suffered a fresh injury in the same area and is sidelined for this game. Bizarrely, it was his Betis teammate Sofyan Amrabat who inflicted that wound in the Europa League against Utrecht, with the Moroccan also picking up an injury in the accidental clash.
Amrabat will also miss this match as a result, while Héctor Bellerín is sidelined as well. Antony has been struggling with a minor ankle issue this week, but is expected to be fit.
As for Barcelona, they're missing four players with Marc-André ter Stegen, Ronald Araújo, Gavi and Dani Olmo unavailable. The latter picked up a shoulder injury against Atleti that looks set to rule him out until the new year.
Flick may consider some light rotation following that game. Marcus Rashford and Ferran are fresh options in attack, while Marc Casadó and Andreas Christensen are alternative options further back.
Real Betis vs Barcelona Predicted Lineups
- Real Betis: Valles, Ruibal, Natan, Bartra, Gomez, Altimira, Roca, Antony, Fornals, Ezzalzouli, Hernandez
- Barcelona: J. Garcia, Kounde, Cubarsi, Martin, Balde, De Jong, E Garcia, Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha, Lewandowski
Barcelona are the 7/10 favourites to leave Seville with maximum points. You can back Real Betis to win at 16/5, while the Draw is also priced at 16/5.
Over 3.5 goals has landed in six of the last seven Barça games, and it's on offer at 10/11 here. You can back Betis to score over 1.5 goals at 5/4, while the visitors are priced at 11/8 to score over 2.5 goals.
Both teams to score two or more goals is priced at 9/4. Meanwhile, you can back Both teams to score in both halves at 11/2.
As was the case in midweek, there is uncertainty over who will start in the most advanced roles for Barcelona. Ferran may be preferred to Robert Lewandowski up top on this occasion, with the Spain international priced at 21/20 to score anytime.
Lamine Yamal will almost certainly start on the right flank again. He's available at 6/5 to score anytime, while Raphinha is priced at 5/4 in the same market.
Cucho Hernández looks sure to lead the line for Betis. The striker is on offer at 13/2 to score first, and 7/4 to score anytime. Meanwhile, you can back Antony to get on the scoresheet at 2/1.
Real Betis vs Barcelona Stats
- Since moving position, Pablo Fornals has had 2+ Shots in three-straight matches.
- Barcelona have the best Shots on Target/90 in La Liga at 7.33.
Real Betis vs Barcelona Prediction 1 - Both teams to score & Real Betis over 9.5 shots @ 5/6 via Bet Builder
The recent history of this fixture, and the trends we've seen from Barcelona this season strongly point to both teams scoring in this game. That has been the case in 75% of their matches this term in all competitions.
Flick has shown no signs that he intends to change his ways. The approach is to try to outscore the opposition, which does leave them exposed defensively at times. Even a fairly limited Alavés side had nine attempts and a number of clear chances at Camp Nou last weekend in a 3-1 defeat.
This will be a much tougher game, and I'm using the Bet Builder to back Both teams to score and Real Betis to have over 9.5 shots at 5/6.
Real Betis vs Barcelona Prediction 1 - Pablo Fornals to have 2 or more shots @ 13/8
Without Isco, and with Giovani Lo Celso struggling with fitness issues that have limited his participation in recent weeks, Fornals may again be used as the most advanced Betis midfielder in this game.
He is thriving on the extra responsibility that has been left on his shoulders as a result of injuries to other players. The ex-West Ham man has registered three goals and four assists in 14 league appearances, most of which have come in a holding midfield role.
He had three shots on goal in the Seville derby last weekend, operating further up the pitch. The 29-year-old has had at least two attempts in each of his last three matches, and in the kind of form he's in, Fornals will surely be keen to test Joan García in this clash.
In what should be an open affair, I'm backing Fornals to have two or more shots at 13/8.
