Horse Racing Tips: Sea is the one to beat in Kempton’s feature

As usual we don’t have any Irish racing to look forward to on Monday but there are four meetings taking place across Britain, two of which are National Hunt cards.

Ayr kicks us off with a seven-race card, a Kempton all-weather meeting follows and more jumping action from Plumpton. Wolverhampton provides the evening entertainment. We have three strong fancies to keep an eye on throughout the afternoon and they include an all-weather specialist in Kempton’s Listed feature race, the Hyde Stakes.

12:45 Ayr - Upon Tweed @ 1/2

Trainer Nicky Richards is winless in the last fortnight but if there’s any horse who can change that for him, it’s UPON TWEED. This promising five-year-old has won both his starts under rules and has scope for improvement in the novice hurdle sphere.

Making his debut in a Newcastle bumper back in February, he was held up in the early stages of the race and travelled strongly throughout.

He took up the running in the final couple of furlongs and kicked clear to score by eight-and-a-half lengths after Danny McMenamin pushed the button.

Conman John was back in second that day and he has since won a Cheltenham novice hurdle, providing a strong boost to the form, and the fourth has also scored over hurdles.

Richards’ gelding was equally as impressive when winning by the same distance on his first start over hurdles over course and distance last time out. There’s room for improvement in the jumping department but clearly he’s a talented horse and there should be more to come.

Jamie Snowden has maintained a healthy strike-rate through much of the autumn and is operating at 38 per cent. That alone is enough to be confident about JACKSTELL’s chances but he has also progressed at a rapid rate throughout the current campaign.

Unbeaten in three starts this season, he started off with a very comfortable win in a novice hurdle at Warwick in October. A 7lb penalty made little difference at Hereford next time and he went on to score by just shy of two lengths.

Snowden stepped him back up in trip for his handicap debut over course and distance last time out and he produced a career-best performance to score comfortably once again, despite getting hampered by a loose horse.

The handicapper has responded with a 5lb rise, which could prove to be fairly generous, and it would be unwise to rule out further improvement.

15:27 Kempton - Tyrrhenian Sea @ 17/2

This Listed contest has been priced up as a fairly open-and-shut case but the market may well have got it wrong. Roger Varian’s TYRRHENIAN SEA saves all of his best performances for the all-weather and he was an impressive winner when last seen on an artificial surface.

It’s unwise to judge him on his two performances during the turf season and he was much too good for 2024 Sussex Stakes runner-up Maljoom when winning a Lingfield Listed contest by two-and-a-quarter length in February.

A return to top form is anticipated now back on the all-weather and the seven-year-old has a good record in the month of December. Added to that, three of his five victories have come with Jack Mitchell on board and he is set to take the ride once again.
